Quantum Fields and Strings

 In this talk I'll explain how to take a well-defined flat-space limit of brane models of AdS coupled to a non-gravitating bath. In the dual BCFT this amounts to a triple-scaling limit where both the number of boundary degrees of freedom and the boundary coupling are taken to infinity while the BCFT boundary piecewise approaches a lightcone. The resulting construction offers a new approach to study the relation between the flat limit of AdS and Carrollian/Celestial CFT, as well as the potential to carry over ideas from AdS/CFT to flat space. I will discuss some implications for entanglement entropy in flat space, in particular the fact that two different notions of entanglement entropy arise on scri, depending on whether one traces out modes which have left through scri.

 In this talk, I will describe recent work on holographic correspondences in spacetimes which interpolate from anti-de Sitter space in the deep bulk to asymptotic regions which share some properties with flat space. Examples include the linear dilaton throat in the F1-NS5 solution and the NCOS decoupling limit of the D1-D5 system. In both examples, null geodesics take infinite coordinate time to reach the boundary, the causal structure resembles that of Minkowski space, and we can sensibly study radiation near future null infinity. These spacetimes are good solutions of string theory and thus might be considered candidates for a top-down sort of celestial holography.

In this talk, I will describe how ideas from geometry and combinatorics can help us understand the mathematical and physical properties of cosmological integrals. From efficiently deriving canonical differential equations to a systematic method for finding a minimal basis for the physical subspace. Time permitting, I will also comment on how geometry and combinatorics control the zeros of cosmological integrands.

I will explain a recently proposed holographic scenario for pure dS3 Einstein quantum gravity. The dual description is a double-scaled matrix model, which is capable of capturing bulk cosmological correlators integrated over the metric at future infinity in order to define gauge-invariant observables. Moreover the matrix model has precisely the right number of degrees of freedom to account for the de Sitter entropy associated with the cosmological horizon seen by an observer. A key step in the logic is a reformulation of the gravity theory in terms of a novel topological quantum field theory. Based on work with Lorenz Eberhardt, Beatrix Mühlmann, building on previous work with Victor Rodriguez.

In 1914, Ramanujan wrote down 17 intriguing formulas for 1/pi, which motivated the modern-day machinery of computing trillions of digits of pi. Most of these formulas lay unproven until the 1980s. The Canadian Borwein brothers wrote a comprehensive treatise proving these formulas in the 1980s. We can now ask, “What is the physics behind Ramanujan’s pi”? I will argue that the physics connection can be found via logarithmic conformal field theories, for instance, those studied in the fractional quantum hall effect, polymers, and percolation. The CFT connection gives rise to an infinite number of new formulas for pi. In contrast, the myriad Ramanujan formulas provoke us into looking into faster converging basis for conformal correlators, which is, in turn, provided by the stringy dispersion relation mentioned above.

In this talk, we develop a systematic framework for understanding symmetries in topological phases in \(2+1\) dimensions using the string-net model, encompassing both gauge symmetries that preserve anyon types and global symmetries permuting anyon types, including both invertible symmetries describable by groups and noninvertible symmetries described by categories. As an archetypal example, we reveal the first noninvertible categorical gauge symmetry of topological orders in \(2+1\) dimensions: the Fibonacci gauge symmetry of the doubled Fibonacci topological order, described by the Fibonacci fusion \(2\)-category. Our approach involves two steps: first, establishing duality between different string-net models with Morita equivalent input UFCs that describe the same topological order; and second, constructing symmetry transformations within the same string-net model when the dual models have isomorphic input UFCs, achieved by composing duality maps with isomorphisms of degrees of freedom between the dual models.

In this talk, I will discuss how one can use the gravitational path integral to compute the supersymmetric index of black holes as well as other black objects in string theory. The saddles that I shall describe admit a non-zero temperature, consequently lacking an infinitely long AdS throat that separates the horizon from the asymptotic region, and also admit periodic boundary conditions for fermionic fields around the thermal circle, consequently counting bosonic and fermionic states with an opposite sign. Since the microscopic calculation of these indices is oftentimes well understood yet the saddles that I shall describe now lack the conventional decoupling limit taken in AdS/CFT, our analysis represents a first step towards understanding holography for supersymmetric observables in flat space.
