Quantum Fields and Strings

The language of integrable systems is widely applicable to string theory. One context where it is useful is the Seiberg-Witten theory, describing low-energy dynamics of confined 4d N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories: the families of complex curves with differentials, playing a central role in this description, appeared to be spectral curves, solving the integrable systems of interacting particles. Moreover, the spectrum of stable BPS particles appears from the consideration of hyperkahler structures on the phase spaces of integrable systems. And the full partition functions of instantons, regularized by Omega-background, solve deuatonomized systems of particles.

In my talk, I will explain correspondence unifying to some extent two latter ones. It relates discrete dynamics of so-called cluster integrable systems and partition functions of 5d N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories, or more generally of topological stings on corresponding local Calabi-Yau manifolds. Based on the simplest non-trivial example, I will show how both "equations" and "solutions" sides of correspondence naturally appear in the simple statistical models of dimers and "melting crystals" made out of them.

We consider four-point correlators in an arbitrary excited state of a quantum field theory.  We show that when the theory and state are holographic, such correlators can produce high-quality movies of point-like bulk particles, revealing the geometry in which they move. In some situations, Einstein’s equations amount to a local differential equation on the correlator data. In theories or states that are not holographic, images are too blurry to extract a bulk geometry. Calculations are performed by adapting formulas from conformal Regge theory, to excited states and out-of-time-order correlators.

One central property of the S-matrix is its invariance under field redefinitions. I will discuss how the geometry of field space makes this invariance manifest. This geometric formulation also has practical consequences. Scattering amplitudes and the renormalization group equations for a theory of scalars and gauge bosons only depend on geometric quantities. Also, the scattering amplitudes satisfy a geometric soft theorem.

I will speak about my recent work with Vladimir Kazakov where we study the SU(Nc) lattice Yang-Mills theory in the planar limit, at dimensions D=2,3,4, via the numerical bootstrap method. It combines the Makeenko-Migdal loop equations, with the cut-off L on the maximal length of loops, and the positivity conditions on certain correlation matrices. Our algorithm is inspired by the pioneering paper of P. Anderson and M. Kruczenski but it is significantly more efficient, as it takes into account the symmetries of the lattice theory and uses the relaxation procedure in the line with our previous work on matrix bootstrap. We thus obtain the rigorous upper and lower bounds on the plaquette average at various couplings and dimensions. The results are quickly improving with the increase of cutoff L. For D=4 and L=16, the lower bound data appear to be close to the Monte Carlo data in the strong coupling phase and the upper bound data in the weak coupling phase reproduce well the 3-loop perturbation theory. We attempt to extract the information about the gluon condensate from this data. Our results suggest that this bootstrap approach can provide a tangible alternative to, so far uncontested, the Monte Carlo approach.

In this talk, I will show that the action of soft graviton operators generates a w(1+infinity) symmetry in gravitational theories minimally coupled to massless and massive scalar matter in 4D asymptotically flat spacetimes.  I will discuss how the symmetry action follows from an infinite tower of soft graviton theorems in momentum space.  By generalizing the previous analyses of w(1+infinity) symmetry in massless amplitudes, these results clarify that the symmetry emerges in 4D asymptotically flat gravitational theories without any additional technical ingredients.  This talk is based on a forthcoming paper with Monica Pate.

We revamp the constructive enumeration of 1/16-BPS states in the maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills in four dimensions, and search for ones that are not of multi-graviton form. A handful of such states are found for gauge group SU(2) at relatively high energies, resolving a decade-old enigma. Along the way, we clarify various subtleties in the literature, and prove a non-renormalization theorem about the exactness of the cohomological enumeration in perturbation theory. We point out a giant-graviton-like feature in our results, and envision that a deep analysis of our data will elucidate the fundamental properties of black hole microstates.

Recently, powerful quantum field theory techniques, originally developed to calculate observables in colliders, have been applied to describe classical observables relevant to gravitational wave physics. This has motivated a proliferation of approaches to extract classical information from quantum scattering amplitudes. Since the double copy suggests that the basis of the dynamics of general relativity is Yang-Mills theory,  in this talk I will first discuss scattering in Yang-Mills theory as a toy model to study the connection between the framework by Kosower-Maybee-O'Connell (KMOC), the language of effective field theory (EFT) and the eikonal phase. After a brief review of the KMOC formalism to compute classical observables from scattering amplitudes, I will consider the dynamics of colour-charged particle scattering and explain  how to compute the change of colour, and the radiation of colour, during a classical collision. Finally, moving on to gravity, I will discuss the deflection of light by a massive spinless/spinning object using the novel worldline quantum field theory (WQFT) formalism for classical scattering.

The background geometry seen by a propagating string in the non-relativistic limit is non-Lorentzian. This motivates us to study the non-relativistic AdS/CFT correspondence as a new example of non-AdS holography. In this talk I will focus on the string side of the correspondence, keeping an integrability perspective, and illustrate remarkable differences from the relativistic theory. I will report on recent progress made in AdS5xS5 non-relativistic strings, in particular regarding their classical string solutions, semi-classical expansion of the action, coset space formulation of the action, Lax pair and some preliminary progress on the spectral curve. In general, observables in QFTs can only be computed perturbatively using Feynman integrals. In this talk, which is based on arXiv:2008.12310 and arXiv:2204.06414, I will address some questions on the computability of such observables. By looking at QFT through the lens of tropical geometry, one can see that the runtime of such computations is dominated by the time it takes to understand the structure of certain polytopes. In the case of scalar QFTs on Euclidean space the relevant polytopes turn out to be generalized permutahedra, whose structure is well-understood thanks to the works of Postnikov, Aguiar and Ardila.  Using these insights, results in a new algorithm for Feynman integral evaluation that exceeds the capabilities of existing methods by multiple orders of magnitude, while being easy to implement.  I will also briefly discuss current wip that extends these findings to QFTs on Minkowski spacetime.

In this talk, I will describe how to implement the conformal bootstrap program in the context of the embedding space OPE formalism introduced by Fortin and Skiba (DOI:10.1007/JHEP06(2020)028). To begin with, I will give some background on the formalism. In particular, I will map out how to build two-, three-, and four-point functions within this framework. I will then lay out how to construct tensorial generalizations of the well-known scalar four-point blocks for symmetric traceless exchange. As I will discuss, these generalized objects satisfy a number of contiguous relations. Together, these empower us to fully contract the four-point tensorial blocks, ultimately yielding finite spin-independent linear combinations of four-point scalar blocks potentially acted upon by first-order differential operators. I will next proceed to describe how to set up the conformal bootstrap equations directly in the embedding space. I will begin by mapping out a general strategy for counting the number of independent tensor structures, which leads to a simple path to generating the bootstrap equations. I will then examine how to implement this method to construct the two-point, three-point, and ultimately four-point conformal bootstrap equations. Lastly, I will illustrate this method in the context of a simple example.

In my talk I will discuss the Euclidean gravitational path integral of N=2 (timelike) Liouville theory on a two-sphere.  We view N= 2 Liouville as a gauge fixed form of a 2d supergravity theory coupled to an N=2 superconformal field theory. N=2 super Liouville admits a positive cosmological constant. I will discuss and contrast the results of supersymmetric localization and the explicit higher-loop evaluation of the path integral around it's dS_2 saddle.

It is well known that quantum information can be strictly localized in quantum field theory. Similarly, one can also localize information in classical gravity up to quantities like the ADM mass which are fixed by the constraints of general relativity. On the other hand, the holographic nature of quantum gravity suggests that information can never be localized deep inside some spacetime region, and is always accessible from the boundary. This is meant to hold as a non-perturbative statement and it remains to be understood whether quantum information can be localized within G_N perturbation theory. In this talk, I will address this problem from the point of view of the AdS/CFT correspondence. I will construct candidate local operators that can be used to localize information deep inside the bulk. They have the following two properties: they act just like standard HKLL operators to leading order at large N, but commute with the CFT Hamiltonian to all orders in 1/N. These operators can only be constructed in a particular class of states which have a large energy variance, for example coherent states corresponding to semi-classical geometries. The interpretation of these operators is that they are dressed with respect to a feature of the state, rather than to the boundary. I will comment on connections with black holes and computations of the Page curve.
