We will argue that even with semiclassical gravity, it can be shown that a copy of  all the information on a Cauchy slice resides near the boundary of the slice. We will first demonstrate this in asymptotically global AdS, and then in four-dimensional asymptotically flat space. We will then describe a physical protocol that can be used to verify this property at low-energies and within perturbation theory. This property of gravity implies that information about the black-hole interior is always present "outside" the black hole, which leads to a fresh perspective on the information paradox.

We reconsider the black hole firewall puzzle, emphasizing that quantum error-correction, computational complexity, and pseudorandomness are crucial concepts for understanding the black hole interior. We assume that the Hawking radiation emitted by an old black hole is pseudorandom, meaning that it cannot be distinguished from a perfectly thermal state by any efficient quantum computation acting on the radiation alone. We then infer the existence of a subspace of the radiation system which we interpret as an encoding of the black hole interior. This encoded interior is entangled with the late outgoing Hawking quanta emitted by the old black hole, and is inaccessible to computationally bounded observers who are outside the black hole. Specifically, efficient operations acting on the radiation, those with quantum computational complexity polynomial in the entropy of the remaining black hole, commute with a complete set of logical operators acting on the encoded interior, up to corrections which are exponentially small in the entropy. Thus, under our pseudorandomness assumption, the black hole interior is well protected from exterior observers as long as the remaining black hole is macroscopic. On the other hand, if the radiation is not pseudorandom, an exterior observer may be able to create a firewall by applying a polynomial-time quantum computation to the radiation.

Abstract: Large N matrix quantum mechanics are central to holographic duality but not solvable in the most interesting cases. We show that the spectrum and simple expectation values in these theories can be obtained numerically via a `bootstrap' methodology. In this approach, operator expectation values are related by symmetries -- such as time translation and SU(N) gauge invariance -- and then bounded with certain positivity constraints. We first demonstrate how this method efficiently solves the conventional quantum anharmonic oscillator. We then reproduce the known solution of large N single matrix quantum mechanics. Finally, we present new results on the ground state of large N two matrix quantum mechanics.

Measurements of gravitational lensing in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) allow the dark matter distribution to be mapped out to uniquely high redshifts. After giving a brief overview of current and upcoming CMB lensing measurements, I will focus on two new ways of using CMB lensing, in combination with galaxy surveys, to constrain the early universe. First, I will explore how CMB lensing and galaxy surveys could provide insights into current discrepancies in measurements of the Hubble constant. Second, I will explain why new approaches to de-lensing – removing the lensing effect to reveal the primordial polarization sky – will be important for probing the early universe with the Simons Observatory CMB experiment.

We are going to discuss the physics reach and the experimental challenges
of directional WIMP-like Dark Matter searches, illustrating the concept of the CYGNUS-TPC international collaboration and how the CYGNO effort fits into it.
We are going to present the latest R&D results in the field and discuss future short and long term developments of such techniques, also in the context of solar Neutrinos measurements.

The axion solution to the strong CP problem also provides a natural dark matter candidate. If the Peccei-Quinn symmetry has ever been restored after inflation, topological defects of the axion field would have formed and produced relic axions, whose abundance is in principle calculable. We study the contribution to the abundance produced by string defects during the so-called scaling regime. Clear evidence of scaling violations is found, the most conservative extrapolation of which strongly suggests a large number of axions from strings. The overall result is a lower bound on the QCD axion mass in the post-inflationary scenario that is substantially stronger than the naive one from misalignment.

The computation of transition amplitudes in Loop Quantum Gravity is still a hard task, especially without resorting to large-spins approximations. In Marseille we are actively developing a C library (sl2cfoam) to compute Lorentzian EPRL amplitudes with many vertices. We have already applied this tool to obtain interesting results in spinfoam cosmology and on the so-called flatness problem of spinfoam models. I will highlight the main aspects of our software library, describe the current applications and also introduce undergoing developments (Montecarlo over spin space, tensor contractions, GPU offloading) that will greatly enhance the library's speed and capabilities.

Most massive stars spend their lives in so close orbit with a companion star that severe mass exchange or even coalescence is inevitable as the stars evolve and swell. A third of massive stars are thus stripped of their fluffy, hydrogen-rich envelopes, leaving the compact helium core exposed. These stripped stars are so hot that most of their radiation is emitted in the ionizing regime. Using evolutionary and spectral models of stripped stars, I will show how they sometimes dominate the ionizing emission from full stellar populations and even significantly contribute to cosmic reionization. With their hard ionizing spectra, stripped stars possibly leave observable traces, for example in the nebular spectrum of distant galaxies. 

Apart from being ionizing sources, stripped stars are also interesting to consider as gravitational wave emitters. Creating a population model, we predict that several stripped stars orbiting compact objects will be detectable by LISA.

ProtoDUNE-SP is a single-phase liquid argon (LAr) TPC located at CERN’s neutrino platform facility. This detector is a large scale prototype providing, for the first time, a full validation of the use of the membrane tank technology for large dimension cryostats. With more than 2 years of continuous and stable operation, protoDUNE-SP demonstrates the reliability of the LAr TPC technology for the 10-kton fiducial mass detectors for the DUNE experiment. In this talk the design of the prototype will be presented. The TPC and light system detector performances recently published[1] will be also reviewed.

Two of the outstanding open questions in physics are the nature of dark matter and the fundamental nature of neutrinos. DARWIN is a next-generation experiment aiming to reach a dark matter sensitivity limited by the irreducible neutrino backgrounds. The core of the detector will have a 40 ton liquid xenon target operated as a dual-phase time projection chamber. The unprecedented large xenon mass, the exquisitely low radioactive background and the low energy threshold will allow for a diversification of the physics program beyond the search for dark matter particles: DARWIN will be a true low-background, low-threshold astroparticle physics observatory. I will present the status of the project, its science reach, and discuss the main R&D topics.

The CUPID-Mo experiment, currently taking data at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France), is a demonstrator for CUPID, the next-generation upgrade of the first ton-scale cryogenic 0νββ-search, CUORE. The experiment is searching for 0νββ decay of 100Mo with an array of 20 enriched ~0.2 kg Li2MoO4 crystals. The detectors are operated deep under the Frejus mountain at a depth of 4800 m.w.e. in a dilution refrigerator at ~20 mK. They are complemented by cryogenic Ge light detectors allowing us to distinguish alpha from beta/gamma events by the detection of both heat and scintillation light signals. With a bolometric performance of ~ 7 keV energy resolution (FWHM) at 2615 keV, full alpha-to-beta/gamma separation and excellent radio-purity levels, we operate in the background free regime. For the present analysis, we consider more than one year of data acquired between March 2019 and April 2020. With 2.17 kg x yr of exposure and a high analysis efficiency of ~ 90%, we are able to set a new world leading limit for 0νββ decay of 100Mo. In this seminar, I will present the details of the analysis, the new limit of T1/2 > 1.4 x 1024 yr at 90% c.i. and I will conclude with an outlook on the data taken up to the end of CUPID-Mo operations in July 2020 and further upcoming analyses.
