Scientific Series

Recently, machine learning has become a popular tool to use in fundamental science, including lattice field theory. Here I will report on some recent progress, including the Inverse Renormalisation Group and quantum-field theoretical machine learning, combining insights of lattice field theory and machine learning in a hopefully constructive manner.

Gamma ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous electromagnetic events in the universe. Short GRBs, typically lasting less than 2 seconds, have already been associated with binary neutron star (BNS) mergers, which are also sources of gravitational waves (GWs). The ultimate fate of a BNS, after coalescence, is usually expected to be a black hole (BH) with 2-3 solar masses. However, numerical relativity simulations indicate the possible formation of a short-lived hypermassive neutron star (HMNS), lasting for tens to hundreds of milliseconds after the BNS merger and before gravitational collapse forms a BH. The HMNS is expected to emit GWs with kHz frequencies that will be detectable by third generation ground-based GW detectors in the 2030s. I will present results from a recent analysis that revealed evidence for HMNSs by looking for kHz quasiperiodic oscillations in gamma-ray observations obtained in the 1990s with the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory.

The Lorentzian path sum in causal set theory(CST)  can be defined using the discrete EInstein-Hilbert or Benincasa-Dowker-Glaser(BDG)  action. It has been a long standing question  in CST whether  the path sum is  dominated by a class of non-continuum like layered posets — this would make it much harder to find a dynamically generated continuum approximation —  or whether the BDG action suppresses this contribution.  In this talk I will discuss a series of results that show that to  leading order in the saddle point approximation,  this dominating  class of layered posets is strongly suppressed. Moreover this is true for a  more general class of actions which include the BDG action.   We conclude with some remarks on the interpretation of these results and related  open questions.

In this talk I will show the equivalence of several different tests of the Jacobi identity for celestial currents at tree level, in particular finding a simple, practical condition on hard momentum space 4-point amplitudes in any EFT. Along the way I will clarify the role of the order of soft and collinear limits in obstructing the Jacobi identity for soft insertions and I will argue that, despite their current-algebra-like properties, soft insertions as formulated in this talk cannot be interpreted as local operators in celestial conformal field theory.

Inflationary cosmology is notoriously past geodesically incomplete in many situations. However, it is generally unknown whether the geodesic incompleteness implies the existence of an initial spacetime curvature singularity or whether the spacetime may be extended beyond its null past boundary. In homogeneous and isotropic cosmology with flat spatial sections, we classify which past inflationary histories have a scalar curvature singularity and which might be extendible/non-singular. We derive rigorous extendibility criteria of various regularity classes for quasi-de Sitter spacetimes that evolve from infinite proper time in the past. Beyond homogeneity and isotropy, we show that continuous extensions respecting the Einstein field equations with a perfect fluid must have the equation of state of a de Sitter universe asymptotically. An interpretation of our results is that past-eternal inflationary scenarios are most likely physically singular, except in very special situations.

We present an improved formulation of 4-dimensional Lorentzian spinfoam quantum gravity with cosmological constant. The construction of spinfoam amplitudes uses the state-integral model of PSL(2,C) Chern-Simons theory and the implementation of simplicity constraint. The formulation has 2 key features: (1) spinfoam amplitudes are all finite, and (2) With suitable boundary data, the semiclassical asymptotics of the vertex amplitude has two oscillatory terms, with phase plus or minus the 4-dimensional Lorentzian Regge action with cosmological constant for the constant curvature 4-simplex.

No-hair theorems prevent black holes in General Relativity (GR) from being characterized by any property other than their mass, electric charge, and spin. Scalar fields provide perhaps the simplest way to generalize GR, and it turns out that cases exist where the no-hair theorems can be evaded and black holes with scalar hair may emerge. In this talk I will examine the notion of nontrivial scalar field configurations arising in the strong regime of gravity near black holes, but also compact neutron stars and wormholes. I will go over the concept of spontaneous scalarization of compact objects and discuss the viability of scalarized solutions against observations.

In 2008 Masahiro Hotta proposed a protocol for transporting energy between two localized observers A and B without any energy propagating from A to B. When this protocol is applied to the vacuum state of a quantum field, the local energy density in the field achieves negative values, violating energy conditions

We will explore the protocol of quantum energy teleportation and show how quantum information techniques can be used to activate thermodynamically passive states. We will review the first experiment showcasing the local activation of ground state energy (carried out in 2022), and we will discuss the potential of this relativistic quantum information protocol to create exotic distributions of stress-energy density in a quantum field theory, and how spacetime might react to them.

Recent progress in the development of quantum technologies has enabled the direct investigation of dynamics of increasingly complex quantum many-body systems. This motivates the study of the complexity of classical algorithms for this problem in order to benchmark quantum simulators and to delineate the regime of quantum advantage. Here we present classical algorithms for approximating the dynamics of local observables and nonlocal quantities such as the Loschmidt echo, where the evolution is governed by a local Hamiltonian. For short times, their computational cost scales polynomially with the system size and the inverse of the approximation error. In the case of local observables, the proposed algorithm has a better dependence on the approximation error than algorithms based on the Lieb–Robinson bound. Our results use cluster expansion techniques adapted to the dynamical setting, for which we give a novel proof of their convergence. This has important physical consequences besides our efficient algorithms. In particular, we establish a novel quantum speed limit, a bound on dynamical phase transitions, and a concentration bound for product states evolved for short times.

We identify the microstates of the non–supersymmetric, asymptotically flat 2$d$ black hole in the dual $c=1$ matrix quantum mechanics (MQM). We calculate the partition function of the theory using Hamiltonian methods and reproduce one of two conflicting results found by Kazakov and Tseytlin. We find the entropy by counting states and the energy by approximately solving the Schrodinger equation. The dominant contribution to the partition function in the double-scaling limit is a novel bound state that can be considered an explicit dual of the black hole microstates. This bound state is long-lived and evaporates slowly, exactly like a black hole in asymptotically flat space.

The coordinate functions on a Poisson variety are log-canonical if the Poisson bracket of two coordinate functions equals a constant times the product of these functions. We consider the symplectic groupoid of unipotent upper-triangular matrices equipped with canonical Poisson bracket. We described a system of log-canonical coordinates and the corresponding cluster structure. As a bonus, we discovered a system of log-canonical coordinates on Teichmueller space of closed genus 2 surfaces. This is joint work with L. Chekhov.

In recent years, machine learning has been successfully used to identify phase transitions and classify phases of matter in a data-driven manner. Neural network (NN)-based approaches are particularly appealing due to the ability of NNs to learn arbitrary functions. However, the larger an NN, the more computational resources are needed to train it, and the more difficult it is to understand its decision making. Thus, we still understand little about the working principle of such machine learning approaches, when they fail or succeed, and how they differ from traditional approaches. In this talk, I will present analytical expressions for the optimal predictions of three popular NN-based methods for detecting phase transitions that rely on solving classification and regression tasks using supervised learning at their core. These predictions are optimal in the sense that they minimize the target loss function. Therefore, in practice, optimal predictive models are well approximated by high-capacity predictive models, such as large NNs after ideal training. I will show that the analytical expressions we have derived provide a deeper understanding of a variety of previous NN-based studies and enable a more efficient numerical routine for detecting phase transitions from data.
