Gravitational scattering provides valuable insight into classical dynamics and is likely of fundamental importance in quantum gravity.  However, a complete framework for gravitational scattering does not yet exist.  The lack of a clear framework hinders progress; for example, different groups have reported different results for the loss of angular momentum in post-Minkowskian scattering.  In this talk I will report on recent work 2303.17124 with Compere and Wei constructing a general framework for classical gravitational scattering of finite-sized massive bodies in four spacetime dimensions.  We formulate assumptions and definitions such that the five asymptotic regions (past/future timelike/null infinity and spatial infinity) share a single Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) group of symmetries and associated charges and derive global conservation laws stating that the total change in charge is balanced by the corresponding radiative flux.  Our assumptions are compatible with all known properties of scattering spacetimes, including certain logarithmic corrections that invalidate common falloff assumptions.  Among the new implications are rigorous definitions for quantities like initial/final spin, scattering angle, and impact parameter in multi-body spacetimes, without the use of any preferred background structure.  We show that spin is supertranslation-invariant, while impact parameter is not.  To complement these derivations I will emphasize a helpful "puzzle piece" diagram that faithfully represents all five asymptotic regions, illustrating their roles in the scattering problem.

In recent work, Aganagic proposed a categorification of quantum link invariants based on a category of A-branes, which is solvable explicitly. The theory is a generalization of Heegaard-Floer theory from gl(1|1) to arbitrary Lie algebras. I will describe in the detail the two simplest cases: the su(2) theory, categorifying the Jones polynomial, and the gl(1|1) theory, categorifying the Alexander polynomial. I will give an explicit algorithm for computing link homologies in these cases. I will also briefly describe the generalization to other simple Lie algebras and to Lie superalgebras of type gl(m|n). A key subroutine in quantum computing, especially in quantum simulation, is to prepare thermal states or ground states of Hamiltonians. Today, I will talk about a new family of quantum algorithms for this task. Physically, our algorithms distill the essence of system-bath interaction by simulating an effective Lindbladian; computationally, our algorithms are quantum analogs of classical Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling. Given the ubiquity of thermodynamics and the triumph of classical Monte Carlo methods, we anticipate that quantum thermal state preparation will become indispensable in quantum computing.

The classical spacetime manifold of general relativity disappears in quantum gravity, with different research programs suggesting a variety of alternatives in its place. As an illustration of how philosophers might contribute to an interdisciplinary project in quantum gravity, I will give an overview of recent philosophical debates regarding how classical spacetime "emerges."  I will criticize some philosophers as granting too much weight to the intuition that a coherent physical theory must describe objects as located in space and time.  I will further argue, based in part on historical episodes, that an account of emergence needs to recover the structural features of classical GR responsible for its empirical success.  This is more demanding than it might at first appear, although the details of recovery will differ significantly among different approaches to quantum gravity.

I will construct a top-down example of celestial holography, based on recent work with Costello and Paquette. Our duality relates certain models of self-dual gauge theory and conformal gravity, placed on an asymptotically flat four dimensional spacetime called Burns space, to a two dimensional chiral algebra living on D1-branes in a topological string theory on twistor space.

Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) such as acenes have long been studied due to its interesting optical properties and low singlet triplet gaps. Earlier studies have already noticed that use of complete valence active space is imperative to the understanding of its qualitative and quantitative properties. Since complete active space based methods cannot be applied to such large active spaces, we have used density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) based approaches. Further small modification to the PAH topology shows interesting new phases of behaviour in its optical gaps. We have understood the effect of these effects based on spin frustration due to the presence of odd membered rings. In this talk, I will discuss these observations from molecular and model Hamiltonian perspectives.Further developments based on artificial neural network based configuration interaction for strongly correlated systems will also be discussed.5  The similarities between the ANNs and the MPS wavefunctions will be leveraged for 2D systems.

We are in a new era of gravitational physics in which both gravitational-wave measurements and cosmological observations can be used to test fundamental physics. Moreover, recent computational developments allow us to investigate (at present largely unexplored) regimes where the gravitational force is strong – a very promising area to search for new physics. In this talk I will overview two cases in which we aim to use strong-gravity to learn about the dark components of the universe: the interaction of binary black hole mergers with their dark matter environments and the emission and propagation of scalar gravitational waves, a distinct signature of theories aiming to explain dark energy.

This talk is based on joint work with Owen Gwilliam and Brian Williams. We define factorization homology of factorization envelopes valued in a collection of generalized Weyl modules supported on a cycle in a smooth complex projective variety X. When X is a smooth projective curve, and the cycle a collection of points, we recover the space of coinvariants studied in CFT.

I will introduce a family of dual-unitary circuits in 1+1 dimensions which are invariant under the joint action of Lorentz and scale transformations. With the same dual unitaries I will construct tensor-network states for this 1+1 model and interpret them as spatial slices of curved 2+1 discrete geometries. These tensor-network states satisfy the Ryu-Takayanagi conjecture outside event horizons, but the geometry of the network is also well defined inside the horizon. The dynamics of the circuit induces a natural dynamics on these geometries which reproduces GR phenomena like the gravitational redshift, the formation of black holes and the growth of their throat.

Gravity is exciting from both theoretical and observational perspectives. In this talk, I will discuss how gravitational observables, such as waveforms, can be determined from scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory. We can therefore use the full arsenal of theoretical collider physics to compute gravitational waveforms. As an example, I will describe the waveform generated in a scattering process at next-to-leading order. I will finish by discussing how amplitudes can further be used to understand non-radiative aspects of gravity, including the curvature of the Kerr metric itself. This leads to a network of “double copy” relations between classical solutions of the Maxwell and Einstein equations.

We study the low-energy effective action for relativistic superfluids obtained by integrating out the heavy fields of a UV theory. A careful renormalization procedure is required if one is interested in deriving the EFT to all orders in the light fields (at a fixed order of derivatives per field). The result suggests a general relation between finite density and spontaneous symmetry breaking for QFTs of interacting scalars with an internal global symmetry. The ground state at finite chemical potential of these systems is usually associated with a superfluid phase, in which the global symmetry is spontaneously broken along with Lorentz boosts and time translations. We show that this expectation is always realized at one loop for complex scalar fields with arbitrary UV potential in d > 2 spacetime dimensions. The physically distinct phenomena of finite charge density and spontaneous symmetry breaking occur simultaneously. We quantify this result by deriving universal scaling relations for the symmetry breaking scale as a function of the charge density, at low and high density. Moreover, we show that the critical value of μ coincides with the pole mass. The same conclusions hold non-perturbatively for an O(N) theory with quartic interactions in d = 3, at leading order in the 1/N expansion. In order to do this we compute analytically the one-loop effective potential at finite μ and zero temperature. As an application we derive in closed form the one-loop EFT for superfluid phonons for arbitrary UV scalar potentials in d > 2. From this we obtain analytically the one-loop scaling dimension of the lightest charge n operator in the $\phi^6$ conformal superfluid in d=3, at leading order in 1/n, reproducing a numerical result of Badel et al.

I will describe a construction that allows to understand spinors in an arbitrary number of dimensions, with arbitrary signature. I will describe what pure spinors are, and how in low dimensions all spinors are pure. The first impure spinors arise in 8 dimensions, and "purest" impure spinors are octonions. I will describe how a spinor in an arbitrary dimension defines a set of geometric structures. The easiest example of this is how a pure spinor defines a complex structure. As one increases the dimension, the types of geometric structures that are described by spinors become more and more exotic. If time permits, I will describe some examples in 14 and 16 dimensions. Almost nothing is known about spinors in dimension beyond 16.
