In this talk, I present a novel framework to do black-hole spectroscopy. This approach is based on a new technique so-called “quasinormal-mode filter”, which can be classified into two subsets: rational filter and full filter. On the theoretical level, I explain how to use the rational filter to understand the ringdown of numerical-relativity waveforms. On the observational level, I introduce a way to incorporate the filter into Bayesian analysis. The new Bayesian framework not only allows us to analyze the ringdown of a real gravitational-wave event without Markov chain Monte Carlo, but also yields a natural estimate of the ringdown start time. By applying our method to GW150914, we find strong and self-consistent evidence for the first overtone from multiple perspectives. On the other hand, the relationship between the full filter and the metric reconstruction is discussed. Its connection to a numerical-relativity technique “Cauchy-characteristic Matching” is provided. In the final part of the talk, I also briefly present our recent progress on fully relativistic 3D Cauchy-characteristic Matching.

Though often not spelled out explicitly, dynamical reference frames appear ubiquitously in gauge theory and gravity. They appear, for example, when constructing dressed/relational observables, describing physics relative to the frame in a gauge-invariant way. In this talk, I will sketch a general framework for constructing such frames and associated relational observables. It unifies previous approaches and encompasses the transformations relating different frame choices. In gravitational theories, this gives rise to an arguably more physical reformulation of general covariance in terms of dynamical rather than fixed frames. I will then discuss an ensuing relational form of locality, including bulk microcausality and local subsystems associated with subregions, both of which can be defined gauge-invariantly relative to a dynamical frame. In the latter case, the frame incarnates as an edge mode field, linking with recent work on finite subregions. In particular, the corresponding boundary charges and symmetries can be understood in terms of reorientations of the frame. Notably, the resulting notion of a subsystem is frame-dependent, as are therefore correlations, thermal properties and specifically entropies. The 6d N = (2,0) theories are superconformal field theories believed to describe the low-energy dynamics of N coincident M5-branes. These theories don't have a known lagrangian description and remain largely mysterious, so it is an interesting question how one might calculate observables there.  An exciting prospect is to use the analytical conformal bootstrap, which offers a way to systematically calculate 1/N corrections at large N. In this talk I will present the bootstrap approach to a case study, that of calculating the 2-point function of stress tensors in the presence of a surface defect.  This setup turns out to be remarkably simple and helps us address some technical issues faced in similar calculations, notably we can derive a supersymmetric inversion formula and check crossing symmetry explicitly. I will also comment on the interpretation of our result in the context of holography, of the chiral algebra construction of Beem et al. and on what it can reveal about the interactions between M2 and M5-branes.

Since the 80s, radio sources have been observed to undergo extreme scattering events (ESEs): large, frequency dependent flux modulations due to scattering off the ISM. Recently, the study of these events has undergone a revived interest due to the increase in pulsar timing data, as well as the realization that FRBs will be scattered by the same structures in the ISM. Models of the structures responsible for ESEs range from spherical-cow approximations (e.g. simple Gaussian profiles) to more exotic models (e.g. plasma shells around compact dark matter). Here we present a new model in which ESEs are produced by corrugated sheets in the ISM, which, when projected onto the plane of the sky, generically form A3 cusp catastrophes. We will argue that this model naturally explains several features in scattering data, including observations of PSR 0834+06 and the original Fiedler et al. 0954+658 ESE.  Moreover, this model is consistent with models of pulsar scintillation and does not require exotic physics to explain. We will discuss potential applications to FRB cosmology that arise from the universality of this model.

There exists a solid framework to study gravitational waves in full, non-linear general relativity when the spacetime is asymptotically flat. An essential aspect of this framework is asymptotic symmetries. These symmetries are the BMS symmetries. The situation for cosmological spacetimes is different, however. Expanding spacetimes, whose expansion is decelerating such as matter- or radiation-dominated universes, share some similarities with the asymptotically flat case nonetheless. Not surprisingly, their asymptotic symmetries also share similarities with the BMS symmetries, but are not the same.

We present a new class of supersymmetric localization principles in the context of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. Contrary to the standard localization, this new principle deals with non-supersymmetric observables. We apply this to provide a path integral understanding of trace formulas in mathematics. Our examples will contain both integrable and chaotic quantum systems, namely trace formulas on compact Lie groups by Eskin, and generic locally symmetric space by Selberg.

I will argue that many theories in which dark matter is light (with a mass < eV) lead to theoretically and observationally interesting dark matter substructure. As a particular, calculable, example I will show that this is the case for a new vector boson with non-zero mass (a `dark photon') that is present during inflation, at which time a relic abundance is automatically produced from vacuum fluctuations.  Due to a remarkable coincidence between the size of the primordial density perturbations and the scale at which quantum pressure is relevant, a substantial fraction of the dark matter inevitably collapses into gravitationally bound solitons, which are fully quantum coherent objects. The central densities of these `dark photon star', or `Proca star', solitons are typically a factor 10^6 larger than the local background dark matter density today. I will also mention how similar substructure might occur in theories of post-inflationary axion-like-particles.

In this talk, I will begin with a brief introduction to celestial holography and setting up the celestial amplitudes, before diving into some recent results on examining the BCFW recursion relations for celestial amplitudes. We start by recasting the celestial incarnation of the BCFW shift as a generalization of the action of familiar asymptotic symmetries on hard particles, before focusing on two limits: large-z and infinitesimal-z. We then discuss how the celestial CFT data encodes the large-z behavior determining which shifts are allowed, while the infinitesimal limit is tied to the celestial bootstrap program via the BG equations that constrain the MHV sector.

In this talk I will present the recent results of my work with Edoardo d'Angelo, Nicolo Drago and Nicola Pinamonti. Using the methods of perturbative algebraic quantum field theory, we have formulated new flow equations on Lorentzian spacetimes that work for arbitrary states (not only the vacuum) and in Minkowski vaccum reduce to Wetterich equations. This has potential applications to the asymptotic safety approach to quantum gravity.

The Lense-Thirring spacetime describes a 4-dimensional slowly rotating approximate solution of vacuum Einstein equations valid to a linear order in rotation parameter. It is fully characterized by a single metric function of the corresponding static (Schwarzschild) solution. We shall discuss a generalization of the Lense-Thirring spacetimes to the case that is not necessarily fully characterized by a single (static) metric function. This generalization lets us study slowly rotating spacetimes in various higher curvature gravities as well as in the presence of non-trivial matter such as non-linear electrodynamics.  In particular, we construct slowly multiply-spinning solutions in Lovelock gravity and notably show that in four dimensions Einstein gravity is the only non-trivial theory amongst all up to quartic curvature gravities that
admits a Lense-Thirring solution characterized by a single metric function. We will also discuss a `magic square' version of our ansatz and show that it can be cast in the Painlevé-Gullstrand form (and thence is manifestly regular on the horizon) and admits a tower of exact rank-2 and higher rank Killing tensors that rapidly grows with the number of dimensions.

We discuss how 3+1-dimensional physics including gravity can arise in the IKKT or IIB matrix model.  The model is related to string theory, but it also provides a direct and accessible definition of  3+1-dimensional physics on suitable backgrounds. This leads to a higher-spin extension of gravity on covariant quantum space-time with manifest volume-preserving diffeos, which is UV finite at one loop.

The search for pragmatic observables of quantum gravity remains at the forefront of fundamental physics research. A large set of ideas collectively known as the gauge-gravity duality have proven fruitful in tackling this problem. While such a duality is believed to universally govern gravitational theories, its nature in theories of gravity that describe our universe to a good degree of approximation is still little understood.

In this talk I will discuss efforts in formulating a holographic correspondence for gravity in four-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes. The proposed dual theory lives on a two-dimensional celestial sphere at infinity and is constrained by a wide range of symmetries. I present recent evidence for this proposal by showing that it arises naturally in a flat space limit of AdS/CFT. I will illustrate this construction with two related examples: the propagation of a particle in a shockwave background and the high-energy scattering of 2 particles.
