All physical constraints of the conformal bootstrap in principle arise by applying linear functionals to the conformal bootstrap equation. An important goal of the bootstrap program is to identify a suitable basis for the space of functionals -- one that would allow us to solve crossing analytically. In my talk, I will describe two particularly convenient choices of the basis for the 1D conformal bootstrap. The two bases manifest the crossing symmetry of the four-point function of a generalized free boson and generalized free fermion respectively. I will use the bases to study small deformations of the two theories. Assuming no new operators appear in the OPE, the generalized free fermion allows no small deformation, and the generalized free boson allows a one-parameter deformation, which coincides with the AdS_2 four-point contact interaction at the leading order. Time allowing, I will discuss the connection of this work to the conformal bootstrap a la Polyakov.

Large scale structure surveys are one of our primary tools for answering open questions in cosmology like: What is the physics behind dark energy? Is gravity well described by general relativity on cosmological scales, or does that description need to be extended? In order to take full advantage of the information contained in survey data, however, we must ensure that we understand our data’s sensitivity to new physics and that our analyses are not biased by systematics. In my talk I’ll describe work I have been doing in this aim for the Dark Energy Survey (DES). I’ll begin with an introduction to how we can use data from surveys like the DES to test LCDM, including approaches to constraining extensions to general relativity with cosmological data. I’ll use that discussion to motivate a so-called growth-geometry split analysis, a consistency test of LCDM that works by comparing constraints from probes of structure growth and expansion history, and will discuss the status of such an analysis applied to DES data. I’ll also give an overview of the blinding strategy planned for future multi-probe DES cosmology analyses.

I'll discuss an ongoing project of mine with Dinakar Muthiah and Oded Yacobi, which is based on ideas of Kreiman-Lakshmibai-Magyar-Weyman.  It is aimed at developing a "nice" standard monomial theory for the affine Grassmannian in type A, where "nice" means hopefully close in spirit to Hodge's classical standard monomial theory for finite dimensional Grassmannians.

We consider planar hairy black holes in five dimensions with a real scalar field in the Breitenlohner-Freedman window and show that is possible to derive a universal formula for the holographic speed of sound for any mixed boundary conditions of the scalar field. As an example, we locally construct the most general class of planar black holes coupled to a single scalar field in the consistent truncation of type IIB supergravity that preserves the SO(3)xSO(3) R-symmetry group of the gauge theory. We obtain the speed of sound for different values of the vacuum expectation value of a single trace operator when a double trace deformation is induced in the dual gauge theory. In this particular family of solutions, we find that the speed of sound exceeds the conformal value. Finally, we generalize the formula of the speed of sound to arbitrary dimensional scalar-metric theories whose parameters lie within the Breitenlohner-Freedman window

In this talk I show how to systematically classify all possible alternatives to the measurement postulates of quantum theory. All alternative measurement postulates are in correspondence with a representation of the unitary group. I will discuss composite systems in these alternative theories and show that they violate two operational properties: purification and local tomography. This shows that one can derive the measurement postulates of quantum theory from either of these properties. I will discuss the relevance of this result to the field of general probabilistic theories. In a second part of the talk I will discuss work in progress and directions for future research. I will show how to generalise the framework used to theories which have different pure states and dynamics than quantum theory. I will discuss two types of theories which can be studied in this framework: Grassmannian theories (same dynamical group and different pure states to quantum theory) and non-linear modifications to the Schrodinger equation (same pure states and different dynamical group).

In general relativity, the effective-one-body (EOB) approach, which consists in reducing the two-body dynamics to the motion of a test particle in an effective static, spherically symmetric metric, has proven to be a very powerful framework to describe analytically the coalescence of compact binary systems.

In this seminar, we address its extension to modified gravities, considering first the example of massless scalar-tensor theories (ST). We reduce the ST two-body dynamics, which is known at second post-Keplerian order, to a simple parametrized deformation of the general relativistic EOB Hamiltonian, and estimate the ST corrections to the strong-field regime; in particular, the ISCO location and orbital frequency.

We then discuss the class of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton (EMD) theories, which provide simple examples of "hairy" black holes. We compute the EMD post-Keplerian two-body Lagrangian, and show that it can, as well, be incorporated within the EOB framework. Finally, we highlight that, depending on their scalar environment, EMD black holes can transition to a regime where they strongly couple to the scalar and vector fields, inducing large deviations from the general relativistic two-body dynamics.

I will discuss constraints on the S-matrix of gapped, Lorentz invariant quantum field theories due to crossing symmetry, analyticity and unitarity.  In particular I will bound cubic couplings, quartic couplings and scattering lengths relevant for the elastic scattering amplitude of two identical scalar particles. After a warm-up in 1+1 dimensions I will move to 3+1 dimensions.  In the cases where the results can be compared with results in the older S-matrix literature they are in excellent agreement.

Gravitational waves from the mergers of five binary black holes and one binary neutron star were detected in the past two years by the advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors. These detections allowed our Universe to be observed in gravitational waves for the first time, and they have tested the predictions of general relativity for dynamical and strongly gravitating systems. I will discuss these results and also highlight a few additional examples of ways in which gravitational waves can shed light on open questions in theoretical physics and astrophysics. One involves the gravitational-wave memory effect, which is a constant change in the gravitational-wave strain produced by the energy that gravitational waves and matter carry away from an isolated system. I will describe the challenges in detecting the memory with LIGO and Virgo, and how the memory is related to the symmetries and conserved quantities of isolated gravitating systems. A second involves using precision astrometry to detect a stochastic background of gravitational waves from astrophysical, and potentially even cosmological, sources. With the upcoming data release from the Gaia mission, it will likely be possible to place improved constraints on the stochastic background at frequencies higher than those coming from the cosmic microwave background, but below those of pulsar timing searches. I will show how these constraints can be determined. Finally, I will discuss gravitational waves from a compact object orbiting an intermediate mass black hole surrounded by a dark matter spike. I will describe how details about the dark matter distribution can be imprinted in the emitted gravitational waves.

Stabilizer states are a rich class of quantum states which can be efficiently classically represented and manipulated. In this talk I will describe some ways in which they can help us to represent and manipulate more general quantum states. I will discuss classical simulation algorithms for quantum circuits which are based on expressing a quantum state as a superposition of (as few as possible) stabilizer states.

One of the most enduring mysteries in particle physics is the nature of the non-baryonic dark matter that makes up 85% of the matter in the universe. For several decades, most searches for this mysterious substance have focused on Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). Recently, there has been a surge in theoretical interest in ultra-light-field dark matter candidates, including QCD axions (spin 0 bosons) and hidden photons (spin 1 bosons), which can be probed through their coupling to electromagnetism or nuclear spin. I will discuss general principles of efficiently searching for the direct detection of the electromagnetic coupling of these candidates, how the sensitivity of these experiments can be improved by the exploitation of quantum correlations in the electromagnetic signals that they produce, and describe the Dark Matter Radio, and experiment searching for axions and hidden photons in the frequency range of 1 kHz through 100 MHz.

In this talk I will discuss recently-identified classes of quantum correlations that go beyond nonlocal classical hidden-variable models equipped with communication. First, in the bipartite scenario, I will focus on so-called instrumental causal networks, which are a primal tool in causal inference. There, I will show that it is possible to “fake” classical causal influences with quantum common causes, in a formal sense quantified by the average causal effect (ACE). Furthermore, I will show that it is possible to violate instrumental inequalities with quantum resources, both in the device-independent and in the 1-sided device-independent settings. Second, in the multipartite setting, I will present a causal hierarchy of multipartite nonlocality. I will make special emphasis on quantum correlations in the upper classes of the hierarchy that define stronger forms of genuinely multipartite quantum non-locality than those previously known. The seminar will touch upon concepts like Bell nonlocality and quantum steering as well as Bayesian nets and causal inference.

We derive constraints on the operator product expansion of two stress tensors in conformal field theories (CFTs). In large N CFTs with a large gap to single-trace higher spin operators, we show that the coupling of two stress tensors to other single-trace operators ("TTO") is suppressed by powers of the higher spin gap, dual to the mass scale of higher spin particles in AdS. The absence of light higher spin particles is thus a necessary condition for the existence of a consistent truncation to general relativity in AdS. We are led to propose that, in general, the inverse gap scale is the CFT "dual" of an AdS derivative in a classical action. These results are derived by imposing unitarity on mixed systems of spinning four-point functions in the Regge limit. Using the same method, but without imposing a large gap, we derive new inequalities on TTO-type couplings valid in any CFT.
