We present a quantum algorithm for simulating the classical dynamics of 2^n coupled oscillators (e.g.,  masses coupled by springs). Our approach leverages a mapping between the Schrodinger equation and Newton's equations for harmonic potentials such that the amplitudes of the evolved quantum state encode the momenta and displacements of the classical oscillators. When individual masses and spring constants can be efficiently queried, and when the initial state can be efficiently prepared, the complexity of our quantum algorithm is polynomial in n, almost linear in the evolution time, and sublinear in the sparsity. As an example application, we apply our quantum algorithm to efficiently estimate the kinetic energy of an oscillator at any time, for a specification of the problem that we prove is BQP-complete. Thus, our approach solves a potentially practical application with an exponential speedup over classical computers. Finally, we show that under similar conditions our approach can efficiently simulate more general classical harmonic systems with 2^n modes.

In this talk, I examine the massless 't Hooft equation. This integral equation governs meson bound state wavefunctions in 2D SU(N) gauge theory in the large-N limit, and it can also be obtained by quantizing a folded string in flat space. The folded string is a limiting case of a more general setup: a four-segmented string moving in three-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) space. I compute its classical spectral curve using celestial variables and planar bipartite graphs, also known as on-shell diagrams or brane tilings. In this more general setup, the 't Hooft equation acquires an extra term, which has previously been proposed as an effective confining potential in QCD. After an integral transform, the equation can be inverted in terms of a finite difference equation. I show that this difference equation has a natural interpretation as the quantized (non-analytic) spectral curve of the string. The spectrum interpolates between equally spaced energy levels in the tensionless limit and 't Hooft's nearly linear Regge trajectory at infinite AdS radius.

Drinfel’d double symmetry of the 4d Kitaev model

We construct the 2-Drinfel'd double associated to a finite 2-group G, and compute its braided 2-category of 2-representations, in order to characterize the topological excitations in the 4d toric code and its spin-Z_2 variant. This work relates the categorical and field theoretical approaches toward characterizing higher-dimensional topological phases in existing literature. In particular, we show that particular twists of the underlying 2-Drinfel'd double is responsible for much of the higher-structural properties that arise in gapped topological phases in 4d. We emphasize that this work also displays the first ever instance of higher Tannakian duality for 2-categories.

Locality and Exceptional Points in Pseudo-Hermitian Physics

This talk discusses the role of non-Hermitian operators in fundamental and effective theories of physics. An implicit assumption of the tensor product model of locality is that the inner product factorizes with the tensor product. Quasi-Hermitian quantum frameworks can be used to lift this assumption while preserving the reality of spectra and unitarity. After characterizing local observable algebras and expectation values, I will examine Bell's inequality and its generalizations, the nonlocal games, in the setting of quasi-Hermitian theories. Pseudo-Hermitian operators characterize systems with time-reversal symmetry. These operators exhibit rich perturbative and symmetry-breaking properties that are unparalleled in the Hermitian regime. I will convey some geometric and topological aspects of these features, with emphasis placed on non-interacting many-body systems.
 

The fundamental nature of dark matter (DM) so far eludes direct detection experiments, but it has left its imprint in the large-scale structure (LSS) of the Universe. I will present a search using cosmic microwave background (CMB) and galaxy surveys for ultra-light DM particle candidates called axions that are well motivated from high energy theory. In combining these datasets, I will discuss how the presence of axions can improve consistency between these probes and, in particular, help alleviate the S_8 cosmological parameter tension (the discrepancy in the amplitude of density fluctuations as inferred from CMB and galaxy data). I will then present complementary searches for ultra-light and light (sub-GeV) DM using a LSS probe called the Lyman-alpha forest. By combining complementary large- and small-scale structure probes, I will demonstrate how current and forthcoming cosmological data will systematically test the nature of DM. In order to model novel DM physics accurately and efficiently in CMB and LSS probes, I will present new machine learning approaches using neural network "emulators" to accelerate DM parameter inference from days to seconds and active learning to reduce massively the computational expense.

The (derived) geometric Satake equivalence plays a central role in the geometric Langlands program: roughly, it describes the category of constructible sheaves of C-vector spaces on Bun_G(S^2) in terms of the Langlands dual group G^. In this talk, I will describe some ideas connecting chromatic homotopy theory to the derived geometric Satake equivalence. For example, we will describe the category of locally constant sheaves of A-modules on Bun_G(S^2), where A is complex K-theory or an elliptic cohomology theory, in Langlands
dual terms. Some of this work was motivated by considerations from physics, and I hope to say what little I know about this, as well as sketch its relationship to the Ben-Zvi-Sakellaridis-Venkatesh program.

Chern-Simons theories can possess 't Hooft anomalies for time-reversal symmetry. In this talk, we will discuss abelian Chern-Simons theories with an interesting time-reversal symmetry algebra and compute the classification of the anomaly, which is captured by a bordism group. In order to get the classification correct I will explain the argument we used that utilized the Smith homomorphism for bordism groups. In order to compute the value of the anomaly we study the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence and find a way to trivialize each layer of the anomaly. I will also discuss the generating manifold for the corresponding bordism group, and how it arises from the Smith homomorphism. The knowledge of this manifold allows one to compute the partition function by using the data that characterizes the Chern-Simons theory and the symmetry actions; this gives a robust check of our answer for the anomaly.  I will talk about new constructions to the parity-violating sector of gravity that can yield large observables, in particular those from inflation. Within this framework, I will demonstrate the potential for seeking gravitational parity-violation in  uncharted regions of parameter space and give hints to novel methods of probing baryogenesis. I will also comment on a few interesting theoretical aspects regarding inflationary  correlators.

After discussing the basics of Carrollian physics, we shall revisit the motion  of massless particles with anyonic spin in the black hole horizons. As recently shown, such particles can move within the horizon of the black hole due to the  coupling of charges associated with a 2-parametric central extension of the 2-dimensional Carroll group to the magnetic field around the black hole -- the so called "anyonic  spin-Hall effect". We shall study several examples of such motions. Of these, the most  interesting is the motion in misaligned (asymptotically uniform) magnetic field around Kerr,  which results in a time dependent motion of Carrollian particles that is reminiscent  of "monarch migration".

Cluster structure on a quantum group allows one to work with its positive representations, a special class of modules similar in spirit to principal series representations but closed under tensor multiplication. On the other hand, cluster techniques proved inadequate for the study of finite-dimensional representation theory. I will discuss how one can reconcile positive and finite-dimensional representations into one theory by studying moduli spaces of local systems with non-generic monodromies.

Dynamical fixed points are late-time attractors of interactive QFTs that differ from thermal equilibria by a constant entropy production rate. We use holographic framework to analyze such fixed points of strongly coupled gauge theories, driven by homogeneous and isotropic expansion of the background metric - equivalently, a late-time dynamics of a corresponding QFT in Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker Universe. As an application, we discuss gravitational reheating of quark-gluon plasma in the exit from the early-cosmology inflation.

I will discuss a novel search for axions using spectropolarimetric observations of magnetic white dwarfs (MWDs). Photons produced as thermal radiation at the MWD surface may convert into an axion as they traverse the magnetosphere, but only the component polarized parallel to the MWD magnetic field. Therefore the MWD radiation at Earth is linearly polarized perpendicular to the magnetic field direction. I detail the analysis of archival linear polarization spectra of a few nearby MWDs that excludes the axion interpretation of the TeV gamma-ray transparency anomalies. I briefly discuss the sensitivity of ongoing and future searches using dedicated data at the Lick Observatory.
