Defining guidelines for future extreme simulations of three-dimensional fluid and magnetohydrodynamic turbulence
High-resolution and high-precision direct numerical simulations (DNSs) play a central role in the elucidation of the statistical properties of turbulence. The goal of this discussion meeting is to make a realistic list of what we would like from the next, state-of-the-art, three-dimensional simulations of turbulence in hydrodynamical equations [e.g., the Navier-Stokes (NS) and the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations]. In particular, we hope to assess what we can achieve, over the next five years or so, in the following: spatial resolution; Reynolds numbers, Prandtl numbers, etc.; numerical precision; lengths of integration in time; added particles or fields. We hope that our discussions at this meeting will help us to evolve guidelines for the next very large DNSs when (a) suitable computers and (b) appropriate scientists become available. We can already identify some preliminary efforts that are needed to facilitate such DNSs, e.g., the preparation of software that can easily and very ...

The ICTS Condensed Matter Programme 2011
The ICTS Condensed Matter Programme 2011 (ICMP 2011) consists of a 10 day Winter School (December 9 to December 18) followed by a 4 day International Conference (December 19 to December 22), both to be held in IISc. Bangalore. The school will have four lecture courses focusing on the core of modern condensed matter physics, while the conference will feature four days of talks at the very forefront of our subject, delivered by a cross-section of internationally eminent speakers. The school will also feature tutorial lectures, evening colloquia and a few research seminars. The ICMP2011 programme solicits applications from interested graduate students and post-docs to fill approximately 50 slots. The programme has some funds to cover local expenses and domestic travel expenses of selected participants. Interested persons should send their applications for participation to the email address ictsmp11@gmail.com. The deadline for receiving applications is October 3, 2011, but students and post...

Aspects of Biology
ICTS has planned a discussion meeting on aspects of biology on December 8, 2011 at ICTS-TIFR in IISc Campus, Bangalore. The meeting will begin at 9.25 am on December 08, 2011. In this meeting we are hoping to get a summary of the important questions, the inter-disciplinary character of and the research going on in this general area. One reason to have this meeting is that we at ICTS would also like to assess how a theory centre, with only dry labs and a data centre, can contribute to this activity in collaboration with more standard biology wet-labs in and outside Bangalore. The format of the meeting would be rapporteur talks followed by short presentations and discussion sessions.Contact: ICTS secretariatTel: 080 2360 8205, 08023608199

Frontiers of Cosmology and Gravitation
Frontiers of Cosmology and Gravitation [FOCG] is a comprehensive programme covering frontline areas of research in these fields, It consists of :A) A School on Cosmology and Gravity Waves, for graduate students and young researchers, to be held in Pune from 1 - 11 December.B) An International Conference on Gravitation and Cosmology [ICGC2011] to be held in Goa from 14 - 19 December. [Registration closes 30th June, 2011]C) A Workshop on Gravitational Wave Astronomy in Pune from 20 - 23 December.A principal aim of the programme is to foster extensive interaction between the Indian community of researchers on Gravitation and Cosmology, and visiting international researchers working on these subjects. The School will consist of a set of about six lecture courses on Cosmology and Gravitational Waves, and four expository lectures. The ICGC series of Conferences are held once every four years under the auspices of the Indian Association for General Relativity and Gravitation (IAGRG). The 7th...

Future of Past
Different aspects of ancient India have been studied by several separate groups on their own with restricted interaction between like-minded scientists. Interdisciplinary interactions have been few and far apart. This has restricted the scope of cross subject studies. In addition, instrumentation facilities in archaeology in India are also woefully inadequate. To bridge this gap between scientists and the experimental needs of the future, a mini Program on "Future of the Past" is being organized. Experts from different areas will come together on a common platform and try to evolve a strategy for the future path of archaeological studies in India. The focus of the Program will be to discuss the instrumentation needs of the future in the field of archaeology and related fields and the manner in which they can be acquired. The format of the Program is the following. The morning sessions are devoted to presentations by experts in the field. Afternoons are devoted to demonstrations of availa...
