Mathematical Physics

In this talk I will describe joint work in progress with Andre Henriques to construct examples of Graeme Segal's functorial definition of 2d chiral conformal field theory. While Segal's definition originated in the 1980's, constructive aspects of the theory continue to be challenging, especially with regard to higher genus surfaces. I will motivate and introduce Segal's definition, and describe a new approach to constructing examples using von Neumann algebras. 

This project examines the structure of a certain category of representations of a Lie algebra called Whittaker modules. Whittaker modules generalize highest weight modules, and the structure of the category is similar to that of Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand’s category O. In particular, Whittaker modules have finite length composition series and all irreducible Whittaker modules appear as quotients of standard Whittaker modules, which are generalizations of Verma modules. Using the localization theory of Beilinson-Bernstein, one obtains a beautiful geometric description of Whittaker modules as twisted sheaves of D-modules on the associated flag variety. I use this geometric setting to develop an algorithm for computing the multiplicities of irreducible Whittaker modules in the composition series of standard Whittaker modules. This algorithm establishes that the multiplicities are determined by parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.

In this talk we will review our physical proposal, with D. Persson and R. Volpato, to understand the genus zero property of monstrous moonshine. The latter was proven by Borcherds in 1992 by brute-force computation but has since resisted a conceptual understanding. We embed the Monster VOA of Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman into a heterotic string compactification and use physical arguments, i.e. T-dualities and decompactification limits, to understand the genus zero property. We find that the Monster Lie algebra (a Generalized, or Borcherds-Kac-Moody algebra) acts as a sort of "algebra of BPS states". We also sketch an analogous proposal, with S. Harrison and R. Volpato, for Conway moonshine using the type II string. Along the way we construct a new super Borcherds-Kac-Moody algebra on which the Conway group acts faithfully and prove its (twisted) denominator identities, which should be identified with BPS state counts in our string theory. 

An approximate representation of a finitely-presented group is an assignment of unitary matrices to the generators, such that the defining relations are close to the identity in the normalized Hilbert-Schmidt norm. A group is said to be hyperlinear if every non-trivial element can be bounded away from the identity in approximate representations of the group. Determining whether all groups are hyperlinear is a major open problem, as a non-hyperlinear group would provide a counterexample to the famous Connes embedding problem.

Given the difficulty of the Connes embedding problem, it makes sense to look at an easier problem: how fast does the dimension of approximate representations grow (as a function of how close the defining relations are to the identity) when we require a given set of elements to be bounded away from the identity. These growth rates are called the hyperlinear profile of the group.

In this talk, I will explain our best lower bounds on hyperlinear profile, as well as the connection to entanglement requirements for non-local games (joint work with Thomas Vidick). Time permitting,  I will also mention some other approaches to looking for non-hyperlinear groups, including the recent work of De Chiffre, Glebsky, Lubotzky, and Thom on a group which is not approximable in the unnormalized Hilbert-Schmidt norm.

Recently, Roland van der Veen and myself found that there are sequences of solvable Lie algebras "converging" to any given semi-simple Lie algebra (such as sl(2) or sl(3) or E8). Certain computations are much easier in solvable Lie algebras; in particular, using solvable approximations we can compute in polynomial time certain projections (originally discussed by Rozansky) of the knot invariants arising from the Chern-Simons-Witten topological quantum field theory. This provides us with the first strong knot invariants that are computable for truly large knots.  But sl(2) and sl(3) and similar algebras occur in physics (and in mathematics) in many other places, beyond the Chern-Simons-Witten theory. Do solvable approximations have further applications?

I will give a brief survey of the study of decomposable Specht modules for the symmetric group and its Hecke algebra, which includes results of Murphy, Dodge and Fayers, and myself. I will then report on an ongoing project with Louise Sutton, in which we are studying decomposable Specht modules for the Hecke algebra of type $B$ indexed by `bihooks’.

Let be a complex semisimple algebraic group of adjoint type and the wonderful compacti
cation. We show that the closure in \overline{G} of the centralizer of a regular nilpotent is isomorphic to the Peterson variety. We generalize this result to show that for any regular , the closure of the centralizer in is isomorphic to the closure of a general -orbit in the flag variety. We consider the family of all such centralizer closures, which is a partial compactication of the universal centralizer. We show that it has a natural log-symplectic Poisson structure that extends the usual symplectic structure on the universal centralizer.

In this talk, I'd like to explain how quantum integrability and (q-deformed) W-algebraic structure arise from the moduli space of quiver gauge theory. It'll be also shown that our construction gives rise to a new family of W-algebras. 

Quiver varieties, as introduced by Nakaijma, play a key role in representation theory. They give a very large class of symplectic singularities and, in many cases, their symplectic resolutions too. However, there seems to be no general criterion in the literature for when a quiver variety admits a symplectic resolution. In this talk, I will give necessary and sufficient conditions for a quiver variety to admit a symplectic resolution. This result builds upon work of Crawley–Boevey and of Kaledin, Lehn and Sorger. The talk is based on joint work with T. Schedler.

I'll discuss an ongoing project of mine with Dinakar Muthiah and Oded Yacobi, which is based on ideas of Kreiman-Lakshmibai-Magyar-Weyman.  It is aimed at developing a "nice" standard monomial theory for the affine Grassmannian in type A, where "nice" means hopefully close in spirit to Hodge's classical standard monomial theory for finite dimensional Grassmannians.

Factorization spaces (introduced by Beilinson and Drinfeld as "factorization monoids") are non-linear analogues of factorization algebras. They can be constructed using algebro-geometric methods, and can be linearised to produce examples of factorization algebras, whose properties can be studied using the geometry of the underlying spaces. In this talk, we will recall the definition of a factorization space, and introduce the notion of a module over a factorization space, which is a non-linear analogue of a module over a factorization algebra. As an example and an application, we will introduce a moduli space of principal G-bundles with parabolic structures, and discuss how it can be linearised to recover modules of the factorization algebra associated to the affine Lie algebra corresponding to a reductive algebraic group G.

This is based on my joint work with Yaping Yang. In this talk, we use the equivariant elliptic cohomology theory to study the elliptic quantum groups.  We define a sheafified elliptic quantum group for any symmetric Kac-Moody Lie algebra. This definition is naturally obtained using the cohomological Hall algebra associated to the equivariant elliptic cohomology. After taking suitable rational sections, the sheafified elliptic quantum group becomes a quantum algebra consisting of the elliptic Drinfeld currents. The Drinfeld currents satisfy the relations of the elliptic quantum group studied by Felder and Gautam-Toledano Laredo. We show the elliptic quantum group acts on the equivariant elliptic cohomology of Nakajima quiver varieties.

In particular, the sheafified elliptic quantum group is an algebra object in a certain monoidal category of sheaves on the colored Hilbert scheme of an elliptic curve. This monoidal structure is related to Mirkovic’s refinement of the factorization structure on semi-infinite affine Grassmannian over an elliptic curve. If time permits, I will also talk about a work in progress, joint with Mirkovic and Yang, towards a construction of a double loop Grassmannian and vertex representations of the toroidal algebra, which in turn is related to representations of the elliptic quantum groups
