Strong Gravity

As the sensitivity of gravitational-wave detector networks increases, high-fidelity signal recovery from the most prominent events becomes possible. The strongest signals present both opportunities and challenges for determining the properties of their sources. Focusing on the problem of inferring the nuclear equation of state from neutron star mergers, I will discuss how systematic errors from waveform modeling have the potential to dominate the inference of matter properties in near-future observations. If properly addressed, loud signals may reveal subdominant effects on the source dynamics, providing novel opportunities to learn about neutron star matter beyond the equation of state. I will outline a data-driven approach to interpreting gravitational-wave observations with phenomenological signal corrections, including some first results from work at CSUF on binary black hole systems. I’ll also discuss methods for connecting unmodeled waveform effects to the energetics of the source system. Finally, I will relate these uncertainty quantification methods to goals for instrumental design, demonstrating how next-generation sensitivities will translate into improved scientific potential.

In this talk, I will present a proof that extremal Reissner-Nordström arises on the black hole formation threshold for the Einstein equations coupled to a self-gravitating plasma. This constitutes the first rigorous result on critical collapse. I will then discuss a formulation of the stability problem for extremal black holes, and present a positive resolution in the case of extremal Reissner-Nordström perturbed by a self-gravitating neutral scalar field in spherical symmetry, despite the presence of the celebrated Aretakis instability. This is based on joint work with Yannis Angelopoulos (Caltech) and Christoph Kehle (MIT) (2402.10190, 2410.16234).

In January 2024, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission was officially adopted by the European Space Agency, marking a new era in gravitational wave astronomy. LISA will be the first space-based gravitational wave detector, designed to explore the cosmos in the millihertz frequency range. This talk will present the mission's key scientific objectives and how the scientific community is preparing for the exploitation of LISA data. I will discuss the anticipated source types and the fundamental questions they could help answer. Then, we will focus on Extreme Mass Ratio Inspirals (EMRIs), a class of sources where small compact objects orbit the massive black holes at the centers of galaxies. These systems hold immense scientific potential for the LISA mission, as they encode a detailed map of the spacetime around the massive black hole. I will discuss how future detections of EMRIs can be used to constrain parameters related to accretion disks and modifications of General Relativity. Finally, I will highlight the path forward in preparing for LISA's launch and how to get involved in contributing to the mission scientific success.

According to general relativity, the remnant of a binary black hole merger is a perturbed Kerr black hole. Perturbed Kerr black holes emit "ringdown" radiation which is well described by a superposition of damped exponentials ("quasinormal modes”), with frequencies and damping times that depend only on the mass and spin of the remnant. The observation of gravitational radiation emitted by black hole mergers might finally provide direct evidence of black holes, just like the 21 cm line identifies interstellar hydrogen. I will review the current status of this "black hole spectroscopy" program. I will focus on: (1) the role of nonlinearities in ringdown modeling, (2) the current observational status of black hole spectroscopy, and (3) future prospects for the observability of modified gravity effects and nonlinear modes.

The remnant of a binary black hole coalescence is a perturbed black hole, which equilibrates by emitting ringdown gravitational waves. These ringdown waves not only encode information in their frequencies about the spacetime structure of the remnant black hole metric, but also have imprints in their amplitudes of the progenitor black hole binary's properties. In this talk I will highlight recent results in black hole ringdown data analysis and new understanding of astrophysical ringdown amplitudes gleaned from numerical relativity simulations, and will then discuss how ringdown analyses may become a vital tool for making inferences of binary black hole properties - even in situations where the gravitational wave signal from the binary inspiral itself is never directly observed.

The groundbreaking detection of gravitational waves from merging black holes has forever changed how we observe the Universe. Upcoming detectors, like the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), will unlock new opportunities by allowing us to detect mergers between stellar-mass black holes (tens of solar masses) and supermassive black holes (SMBHs, millions to billions of solar masses). These fascinating events, known as extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs), provide a wealth of information about the dynamics near SMBHs. A key formation channel for EMRIs involves weak gravitational interactions—two-body kicks—from surrounding stars and compact objects that gradually alter the small black hole's orbit, eventually driving it into the SMBH. However, the picture changes when we consider the presence of SMBH companions, which can induce high orbital eccentricities, further enhancing EMRI formation. In this talk, I will show that combining these two processes is crucial for understanding the progenitors of EMRIs. Moreover, I will demonstrate that SMBH binaries create EMRIs more efficiently than either process alone, making it truly rain black holes! This scenario results in a substantial stochastic gravitational wave background for future detectors like LISA. Finally, I will also discuss how this mechanism affects tidal disruption events and address the tantalizing question: Is it raining stars, too?
