Holographic complexity proposals are interesting because, on one hand, they express universal properties of black hole interiors and, on the other, they go beyond the area-centric view on quantum gravity. Our best take on complexity in quantum field theory is based on assigning a cost to circuits generated by time-dependent Hamiltonians and its minimization. I will discuss recent progress on understanding how the relevant circuits are realized in holography and what are possible gravity duals to good costs. In this talk, I will present MicroBooNE's first results probing the nature of the excess of low-energy interactions observed by the MiniBooNE collaboration. The talk will cover all four electron neutrino analyses that comprise MicroBooNE's first results, with a particular focus on the exclusive search for CCQE-like electron neutrino interactions containing one electron and one proton in the final state (1e1p). The result of the 1e1p analysis, along with results from the other electron analyses and the single-photon analysis, will be discussed in terms of their implications for the MiniBooNE excess. Specifically, I will examine the viability of the single sterile neutrino explanation of the MiniBooNE excess in light of the MicroBooNE electron neutrino results. Additionally, I will introduce the Coherent CAPTAIN-Mills (CCM) experiment at Los Alamos National Laboratory. CCM has unique sensitivity to a number of exotic BSM models, including leptophobic vector-portal dark matter and axion-like particles, some of which may be able to explain the MiniBooNE anomaly.

The Thirring Model is a covariant quantum field theory of interacting fermions, sharing many features in common with effective theories of two-dimensional electronic systems with linear dispersion such as graphene. For a small number of flavors and sufficiently strong interactions the ground state may be disrupted by condensation of particle- hole pairs leading to a quantum critical point. With no small dimensionless parameters in play in this regime the Thirring model is plausibly the simplest theory of fermions requiring a numerical solution. I will review what is currently known focussing on recent results and challenges from simulations employing Domain Wall Fermions, a formulation drawn from state-of-the-art lattice QCD, to faithfully capture the underlying symmetries at the critical point.

In the last few years the concept of symmetry has been significantly expanded. One exotic example of the generalized symmetries, is the “type-II subsystem symmetry”, where the conserved charge is defined on a fractal sublattice of an ordinary lattice. In this talk we will discuss examples of models with the fractal symmetries. In particular, we will introduce a quantum many-body model with a “Pascal’s triangle symmetry”, which is an infinite series of fractal symmetries, including the better known Sierpinski-triangle fractal symmetry. We will also construct a gapless multicritical point with the Pascal’s triangle symmetry, where the generator of all the fractal symmetries decay with a power-law. If time permits, we will also mention a few potential experimental realizations for models with fractal symmetries.

In frustrated magnets, novel phases characterized by fractionalized excitations and emergent gauge fields can occur. A paradigmatic example is given by the Kitaev model of localized spins 1/2 on the honeycomb lattice, which realizes an exactly solvable quantum spin liquid ground state with Majorana fermions as low-energy excitations. I will demonstrate that the Kitaev solution can be generalized to systems with spin and orbital degrees of freedom. The phase diagrams of these Kitaev-Kugel-Khomskii spin-orbital magnets feature a variety of novel phases, including different types of quantum liquids, as well as conventional and unconventional long-range-ordered phases, and interesting phase transitions in between. In particular, I will discuss the example of a continuous quantum phase transition between a Kitaev spin-orbital liquid and a symmetry-broken phase. This transition can be understood as a realization of a fractionalized fermionic quantum critical point.

I will talk about our recent progress on bootstrapping critical gauge theories. In specific, I will first introduce the current understanding that why bootstrap works, for example, why a CFT can sit at a kink of bootstrap bounds and why CFT can be isolated as an island. Then, I will apply these idea to a prototypical critical gauge theory--the scalar QED (i.e. SU(N) deconfined phase transition), and demonstrate it can be isolated in a bootstrap island when the matter flavour is large.

Considering the scale dependent effective spacetimes implied by the functional renormalization group in d-dimensional Quantum Einstein Gravity, we discuss the representation of entire evolution histories by means of a single, (d+1)-dimensional manifold furnished with a fixed (pseudo-) Riemannian structure.

We propose a universal form of the higher dimensional metric and discuss its properties. We show that, under precise conditions, this metric is always Ricci flat; if the evolving spacetimes are maximally symmetric, their (d+1)-dimensional representative has a vanishing Riemann tensor even. The non-degeneracy of the higher dimensional metric is linked to a monotonicity requirement for the running of the cosmological constant, which we test in the case of Asymptotic Safety.

Furthermore, we allow the higher dimensional manifold to be an arbitrary Einstein space, admitting the possibility that the spacetimes to be embedded have a Lorentzian signature, a prime example being a stack of de Sitter spaces. We “derive” the (A)dS/CFT correspondence by applying the gravitational Effective Average Action approach, by solving the corresponding functional RG and the effective Einstein equations, and finally embedding the 4D metrics into the one single 5-dimensional one. It is an intriguing possibility that in this way one might find a specific solution to the general equations which coincides with the 5D kinematic setting which forms the basis of the conjectured (A)dS/CFT correspondence.

I will discuss how spontaneous breaking of time reversal symmetry in multiband superconductors leads quite generally to the formation of small Fermi surfaces of Bogoliubov excitations, irrespective of whether inversion symmetry is absent or present in the superconducting state. In the latter case the inversion symmetry is susceptible to being dynamical broken at low temperatures by the residual interactions. A lattice model of this process will be discussed. Its final result is a reduced, but still finite Bogoliubov-Fermi surface.
