AdS/CFT at 20 and Beyond
In the past twenty years, the discovery of the AdS/CFT correspondence has revolutionized the study of string theory and quantum gravity. The correspondence has also led to the discovery of far-reaching connections between string theory and other seemingly unrelated areas of physics, including the study of strongly correlated condensed matter systems and fluid dynamics. This meeting is a celebration of 20 years of the AdS/CFT correspondence, and will bring together experts in this area to take stock of the progress that has been made, and identify promising directions for future research in this area. The Infosys-ICTS Chandrasekhar Lectures by Juan Maldacena will also be part of this discussion meeting.

RAD@home Discovery Camp
RAD@home is the only Indian citizen-science research program in astronomy. It is a Nation-wide Inter-University collaboratory of 100 plus trained citizen-scientists (aka e-astronomers). Selected citizens with a minimum undergraduate-level science education (BSc/BE) from any University are trained in one week-long RADathome Discovery Camps hosted by a research institute to become a member of the collaboratory. During the camp and thereafter e-astronomers, sitting in their homes, discover exotic black hole-galaxy systems from TGSS radio-images taken with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), largest such telescope and pride of India. Following that, e-astronomers become Co-investigators in an international team of scientists for follow up observations with the GMRT. Many of their discoveries have already been presented in national/international programs and have been published internationally with the e-astronomers as co-authors. Thus RADathome ( #RADatHomeIndia ) with it's Any-BSc...

Summer School for Women in Mathematics and Statistics
The summer school is intended for women students studying in first year B.Sc./B.E./B.Tech. or equivalent degree and having Mathematics as one of the major subjects/courses, during the academic year 2017-2018. Over a period of two weeks, the school shall aim at helping young students gain broader exposure to problem solving skills in mathematics and statistics at the undergraduate level. Specific topics that will be covered are: Mathematical Logic, Advanced Calculus, Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics. There will be problem solving courses in each topic. The level of difficulty will correspond to the first/second year curriculum of B.Math. (hons) or B.Stat. (hons) program at the Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore/Kolkata. Each course will have a brief introductory lecture session on a focus area in one of the topics above and will be typically followed by 3 one and half hour problem solving sessions. The participants are expected to work together to solve the problem sheets...

Living Matter
This program is aimed at Master's- and PhD-level students who wish to be exposed to interesting problems in biology that lie at the biology-physics interface. Besides familiarity with basic biology, they will be expected to have an adequate background in physics and/or mathematics. The school will consist of formal lectures as well as informal tutorial sessions. Two themes form the background to the school. First, evolution by natural selection, while being the chief mode of adaptive evolution, is subject to significant constraints, for example, because of intra-molecular correlations between amino acids in proteins or physical forces in multicellular development. Second, some long-term evolutionary outcomes resemble the short-term behaviour of physico-chemical matter that is based on generic, which is to say mechanical and chemical, properties of solids and liquids. The topics to be covered in the lectures are based on these themes and can be outlined in terms of four questions.(a) Do p...

Pressing for Progress: A Discussion Meeting on the Gender Gap in Physics
Science is supposed to be an activity open to all people, regardless of their gender (or, for that matter, their class, ethnicity or caste). However, the practice of science today across the globe falls short of this ideal. The disparity between men and women in the profession is high, especially in the physics discipline, both in India and world-wide.This discussion meeting will address the following questions: What is the nature and extent of gender inequity in the physics profession? Why should practicing physicists care? What has been done so far? What is the way forward? The outcomes from the International Conference On Women in Physics 2017, organised by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, will be presented. The planned global gender gap survey by the International Science Council, and addressing sexual harassment in the workplace will also be discussed. This program is the kick-off event of the newly constituted Gender in Physics Working Group of the Indian...

Analytic and Algebraic Geometry
Complex analytic geometry is a very broad area of mathematics straddling differential geometry, algebraic geometry and analysis. Much of the interactions between mathematics and theoretical physics, especially string theory, channels through complex analytic geometry. Some of the high points of research in this topic are: Yau’s proof of Calabi’s conjecture, Donaldson- Uhlenbeck-Yau’s theorem that polystable vector bundles are precisely the solutions of the Hermitian-Einstein equation, Demailly’s work of Kobayashi hyperbolicity.
