Quantum Matter

Learning how to create, study, and manipulate highly entangled states of matter is key to understanding exotic phenomena in condensed matter and high energy physics, as well as to the development of useful quantum computers. In this talk, I will discuss recent experiments where we demonstrated the realization of a quantum spin liquid phase using Rydberg atoms on frustrated lattices and a new architecture based on the coherent transport of entangled atoms through a 2D array. Combining these results with novel technical tools on atom array platforms could open a broad range of possibilities for the exploration of entangled matter, with powerful applications in quantum simulation and information.

Twisted interfaces between stacked van der Waals Cuprate crystals enable tunable Josephson coupling, utilizing anisotropic superconducting order parameters. Employing a novel cryogenic assembly technique, we fabricate high-temperature Josephson junctions with an atomically sharp twisted interface between Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x} crystals. The critical current density J_c sensitively depends on the twist angle. While near 0 degree twist, J_c nearly matches that of intrinsic junctions, it is suppressed almost 2-orders of magnitude but remained finite near 45 degree. J_c also exhibits non-monotonic behavior versus temperature due to competition between two supercurrent contributions from nodal and anti-nodal regions of the Fermi surface. Near 45 degree twist angle, we observe two-period Fraunhofer interference patterns and fractional Shapiro steps at half integer values, a signature of co-tunneling Cooper pairs necessary for high temperature topological superconductivity.

Monitored quantum circuits (MRCs) exhibit a measurement-induced phase transition between area-law and volume-law entanglement scaling. In this talk, I will argue that MRCs with a conserved charge additionally exhibit two distinct volume-law entangled phases that cannot be characterized by equilibrium notions of symmetry-breaking or topological order, but rather by the non-equilibrium dynamics and steady-state distribution of charge fluctuations. These include a charge-fuzzy phase in which charge information is rapidly scrambled leading to slowly decaying spatial fluctuations of charge in the steady state, and a charge-sharp phase in which measurements collapse quantum fluctuations of charge without destroying the volume-law entanglement of neutral degrees of freedom. I will present some statistical mechanics and effective field theory approaches to such charge-sharpening transitions.

We introduce a viewpoint that the Standard Model (SM) is a low-energy quantum vacuum arising from various neighbor Grand Unification (GUT) like vacua competition in an immense quantum phase diagram. In general, we find the SM arises near the gapless quantum critical regions between the competing neighbor vacua. Alternatively, we can also phrase this viewpoint in terms of the deformation class of quantum field theory (QFT), specified by its symmetry G and its anomaly (i.e., cobordism invariant). Seemly different QFTs of the same deformation class can be deformed to each other via quantum phase transitions. We show that GUT such as Georgi-Glashow su(5), Pati-Salam su(4)×su(2)×su(2), Barr’s flipped u(5), and familiar or modified so(n) models of Spin(n) gauge group, e.g., with n = 10, 18 can all reside in an appropriate SM deformation class, labeled by Z_{16} and Z_2 nonperturbative global anomaly index. We show that Ultra Unification, which replaces some of sterile neutrinos with new exotic gapped/gapless sectors (e.g., topological or conformal field theory) or gravitational sectors with topological origins via cobordism constraints, also resides in an SM deformation class. Neighbor quantum phases near SM or their phase transitions, and neighbor gauge enhanced gapless quantum criticality naturally exhibit beyond SM phenomena. The coupled wire construction is a powerful method for studying exotic quantum phases of matter. In this talk I will discuss some recent work in which this technique was used to realize new types of 3D compressible quantum phases. These phases possess a U(1) charge conservation symmetry that is weakly broken by rigid string or membrane-like order parameters. No local order parameter is present and the emergent quasiparticles have restricted mobility. I will discuss the unusual symmetry breaking mechanism and its connection to the compressibility. For a particular class of models I will also describe an effective low energy theory given by coupled layers Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories.

The charge resistivity/conductivity can take universal values in various scenarios of two-dimensional condensed matter systems. Well-known examples of universal resistivity include 2+1d quantum critical points, (fractional) quantum Hall effects, the criterion of two-dimensional “bad metal”, and the universal resistivity jump predicted at the interaction-driven metal-insulator transition. We construct examples of two-dimensional metallic states with the following exotic behaviors: (1) at low temperature this state is a “bad metal” whose resistivity can be much larger than the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit; (2) while increasing temperature T the resistivity ρ(T) crosses over from a bad metal at low T to a good metal at intermediate T; (3) at low temperature the metallic state has a large Lorenz number, which strongly violates the Wiedemann-Franz law; (4) the state also has a large thermopower (Seebeck coefficient). Motivated by the recent experiment in transition metal dichalcogenides, an exotic interaction-driven metal-insulator transition will also be constructed. The universal resistivity jump at this transition far exceeds what was proposed in previous theory.

I will first give a brief overview of my research in the field of out-of-equilibrium quantum many-
body physics, ranging from the theory of many-body localization, to the recent application of Tensor

Processing Units for accelerating simulations of quantum dynamics. I’ll then focus on (1) the

experimental observation and theoretical explanation of subdiffusive dynamics in a “tilted” Fermi-
Hubbard system [PRX 10, 011042 (2020)], and (2) a “freezing” phase transition between weak and

strong ergodicity breaking in systems with particles that are immobile by themselves, but undergo
coordinated pair hopping [PRB 101, 214205 (2020)]. These topics contain the common thread of
either an emergent or microscopic conservation of the dipole moment (center of mass of the particle
distribution), and I will provide simple pictures for how this leads to the subdiffusion and ergodicity
breaking.

In thermal equilibrium, 1d bosonic systems (e.g. spin- or qubit- chains) cannot support intrinsically topological phases without symmetry protection. For example, the edge states of the Haldane spin chain are fragile to magnetic fields, in contrast to the absolutely stable Majorana edge states of a topological superconducting wire of fermionic electrons. This fragility is a serious drawback to harnessing topological edge states as protected quantum memories in existing AMO and qubit platforms for quantum simulation and information processing. In this talk, I will present evidence for a non-equilibrium topological phase of quasiperiodically-driven trapped ion chains, that exhibits topological edge states that are protected purely by emergent dynamical symmetries that cannot be broken by microscopic perturbations. This represents both the first experimental realization of a non-equilibrium quantum phase, and the first example of a 1d bosonic topological phase that does not rely on symmetry-protection.

Conformal field theories (CFTs) are ubiquitous in theoretical physics as fixed points of renormalization, descriptions of critical systems and more. In these theories the conformal symmetry is a powerful tool in the computation of correlation functions, especially in 2 dimensions where the conformal algebra is infinite. Discretization of field theories is another powerful tool, where the theory on the lattice is both mathematically well-defined and easy to put on a computer. In this talk I will outline how these are combined using a discrete version of the 2d conformal algebra that acts in lattice models. I will also discuss recent work on convergence of this discretization, as well as on applications to non-unitary CFTs that appear in descriptions of problems of interest in condensed matter physics such as polymers, percolation and disordered systems.

I will introduce the notion of Pivot Hamiltonians, a special class of Hamiltonians that can be used to "generate" both entanglement and symmetry. On the entanglement side, pivot Hamiltonians can be used to generate unitary operators that prepare symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases by "rotating" the trivial phase into the SPT phase. This process can be iterated: the SPT can itself be used as a pivot to generate more SPTs, giving a rich web of dualities. Furthermore, a full rotation can have a trivial action in the bulk, but pump lower dimensional SPTs to the boundary, allowing the practical application of scalably preparing cluster states as SPT phases for measurement-based quantum computation. On the symmetry side, pivot Hamiltonians can naturally generate U(1) symmetries at the transition between the aforementioned trivial and SPT phases. The sign-problem free nature of the construction gives a systematic approach to realize quantum critical points between SPT phases in higher dimensions that can be numerically studied. As an example, I will discuss a quantum Monte Carlo study of a 2D lattice model where we find evidence of a direct transition consistent with a deconfined quantum critical point with emergent SO(5) symmetry.

Van der Waals heterostructures provide a rich venue for exotic moir\’e phenomena. In this talk, I will present a couple of unconventional examples beyond the celebrated twisted bilayer graphene. I will start by twisted bilayer of square lattice with staggered flux, which exhibits a continuum range of magic twisting angles where an exponential reduction of Dirac velocity and bandwidths occurs. Then I will discuss moir\’e magnetism arising from twisted bilayers of antiferromagnets and also ferromagnets. Despite the fact that the parent materials all exhibit collinear orderings, the bilayer system shows controllable emergent noncollinear spin textures. Time permitting, I will also discuss a theory for the potentially continuous metal-insulator transition with fractionalized electric charges in transition metal dichalcogenide moir\’e heterostructures.
