The moduli of Higgs bundles and the Hitchin fibration are central to many thriving research areas, such as mirror symmetry, non-abelian Hodge theory and the geometric Langlands program.  A group-theoretic or multiplicative version was introduced by Frenkel and Ngo in 2011 to give a geometric interpretation of orbital integrals and trace formulas from automorphic representation theory. Since then, there is an ongoing program to replicate the theory of Higgs bundles for the multiplicative case. One notable development is the study of multiplicative affine Springer fibers. Like the usual ones, they are local analogues of multiplicative Hitchin fibers. In this talk, I discuss my work in continuing this program and providing a multiplicative version of Z. Yun's global Springer theory. This involves the study of parabolic multiplicative Higgs bundles and affine Springer fibers. 

Group field theory (GFT) is a background independent approach to quantum gravity in which the quanta represent "building blocks of space". It has been successfully applied to the cosmological setting and shown to have the potential for rich phenomenology. In this talk we will explore a novel proposal to construct operators in GFT based on symmetries of the action, which can then be identified with respective classically conserved currents. This construction relies on a relational coordinate system spanned by four massless scalar fields. As the classical currents are related to the components of the metric, the expectation values of the new GFT operators can be interpreted as giving rise to an effective metric originating directly from the quantum theory. We proceed to investigate the implications of this proposition for a flat homogeneous universe and its perturbations.

In this talk I will present our 3+1 formulation of the Four-Derivative scalar-tensor theory of gravity with a modified puncture gauge that proves to be well-posed. Then I will show the results from Binary Black Hole evolutions that we have obtained from the implementation of these equations with GRFolres, the extension for modified gravity of our numerical relativity code GRChombo.

Several years ago, Nayak and Else argued that Symmetry Protected Topological phases in d dimensions can be classified using non-on-site actions of the symmetry group in d-1 dimensions. Such non-on-site actions can have an “anomaly”, in the sense that the symmetry action cannot be consistently localized. This anomaly is similar but distinct from ’t Hooft anomaly in QFT. Nayak and Else assumed that the symmetry group is finite and the non-on-site action is given by a finite-depth local unitary circuit. I will explain how to generalize the construction of the anomaly index in two directions: to Lie groups as well as to arbitrary actions which preserve locality. For simplicity, I will only discuss the one-dimensional case. One can prove that a nonzero anomaly index prohibits any invariant 1d Hamiltonian from having invariant ground states. This is similar to ’t Hooft anomaly matching in QFT. Lieb-Schultz-Mattis-type theorems arise as a special case where the symmetry group involves translations. This is joint work with Nikita Sopenko.

It is a general expectation in several approaches to quantum gravity that continuum physics emerges as a macroscopic phenomenon from the collective behavior of fundamental quantum gravity degrees of freedom. However, a physical understanding of this emergence process requires us to address deeply intertwined technical and conceptual issues. In this talk, I will focus on two of them: the localization problem, related to the background independence of the underlying quantum gravity theory, and the coarse-graining problem, related to the extraction of the macroscopic, continuum physics from the microscopic, quantum-gravitational one. After discussing what strategies can be adopted in general to address these issues, I will show a concrete implementation of such strategies in the context of the group field theory approach to quantum gravity. I will then demonstrate how these strategies can be employed to extract cosmological physics from group field theories, allowing to clarify the intrinsically quantum-gravitational nature of cosmic structures and to characterize the impact of quantum gravity effects on the emergent cosmological dynamics.

Gravitational waves have uncovered a treasure trove of nearly 90 merging black holes and neutron stars, each with its own unique story to tell. In the first part of the talk, our focus will center on black hole spins, seeking to decipher the secrets hidden within, including their origins, hometowns, and the forces driving their mergers. We will challenge the belief that isolated binary black holes should have spins aligned with orbital angular momentum. We will explore the mechanisms influencing these spins, from their origins to the forces driving their mergers.

The theory of quantum computation has brought us rapid technological developments, together with remarkable improvements in how we understand quantum theory. In this talk, I shall describe the foundations of a theoretical programme to extend the quantum theory of computation beyond quantum theory itself, based on the recently proposed constructor theory. I will then explain a recent application of this new approach to the problem of witnessing quantum effects in gravity.

Linear cosmological observables, like the cosmic microwave background (CMB), 
offer a unique avenue to investigate the elusive properties of dark matter 
(DM) through its interactions with Standard Model (SM) particles. The 
precision of contemporary experiments has reached sub-percent-level accuracy 
(<1%), necessitating theoretical formalism of definitive accuracy to extract 
meaningful constraints on DM-SM interactions.
I will highlight theoretical assumptions made ubiquitously in deriving most 
constraints on DM-SM scattering interactions, which could potentially induce 
order ~1 errors--- a large margin of uncertainty for precision-cosmology. I 
will discuss the progress we have made toward finding better alternatives by 
developing the first exact implementations in well-defined, cosmologically 
relevant regions of parameter space to mitigate the errors induced by two 
widely adopted theoretical assumptions.
Our exact results provide points of reference that can help determine the 
regimes where current DM-SM scattering constraints can be trusted, and where 
we need better methods going forward. I will end by motivating a higher-order 
statistical formalism for DM-SM scattering with up to 100x greater 
sensitivity.

Superradiant instabilities may create clouds of ultralight bosons around rotating black holes, forming so-called "gravitational atoms". The presence of a binary companion can induce transitions between bound states of the cloud ("resonances"), as well as from bound to unbound states ("ionization"). These processes backreact on the binary dynamics and leave characteristic imprints on the emitted GWs, carrying direct information about the mass of the boson and the state of the cloud. Even though some of the resonances can destroy the cloud before the system becomes observable in GWs, their backreaction forces the binary inclination towards attractors, opening up the possibility to infer the existence of the boson from a statistical analysis of a population of binary black holes. Gravitational-wave observatories have established a new field of transient astronomy. The most recent LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA catalog, GWTC-3, identified 90 merging binaries, which range from a double neutron star with a total mass of 2.7 at 40 Mpc (GW170817) to a double black hole with a total mass of 150 at 5.3 Gpc (GW190521). These observations have many connections to nuclear astrophysics. They are revealing the remnants of stellar evolution and supernovae in merging binary systems, they are constraining event rates and astrophysical environments for heavy-element nucleosynthesis, and they are illuminating the dense matter dynamics inside the cores of merging neutron stars. Here, I will describe the imprint of dense matter on gravitational waves, the implications of existing observations for nuclear physics, and some prospects for the coming years including the science potential of proposed next-generation observatories like Cosmic Explorer.

In this talk I will use matrix product states (MPS) to study topological families of gapped ground states in one spatial dimension. To such families I will describe how to associate a gerbe, a mathematical structure which generalizes the line bundle associated to gapped ground states in 0d. Nontriviality of the gerbe represents an obstruction to representing the family of ground states with an MPS tensor that is continuous everywhere over parameter space. I will illustrate these constructions using an exactly solvable topological family which exhibits the key physics in a simple manner.
