Axonal Transport and Neurodgenerative Disorders
Neurodegeneration, a broad symptom which arises out of several different dysfunctions, is prevalent in aging populations, and it mostly affects people after 50 years of age. There are both hereditary and sporadic cases. Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, Charcot Marie Tooth Type 2A (CMT2A), and a variety of different dementia are some examples. Recent research suggests that aberrant intracellular transport and mutations in the motor protein genes can induce such disorders in model organisms and humans. Recent reports also indicate that loss of mitochondrial transport, as well as the slow axonal transport, can induce dementia and neurofibrillary plaques in the brain. In view of these and other related developments, a large body of research has been launched world-wide to elucidate the connection between defective axonal transport and neurodegeneration. This ICTS program, jointly organized by faculties from TIFR, IIT Bombay and UC San Diego, will highlight this new area of research....

Discussion Meeting: String Theory
This three day discussion meeting on String theory will focus on five areas1) The exact counting of black hole entropy.2) The black hole information paradox.3) AdS/CMT.4) Hydrodynamics and Gravity.5) Higher Spin theories and their holographic duals. We will have a session devoted to each of these topics. Each session will consist of a review talk followed by a moderated discussion.

The school aims to provide students and researchers an introduction to the field of quantum information, computation and communication. Topics that will be covered include introduction to quantum information and computation, quantum algorithms, quantum error correction, NMR based quantum computing, solid state quantum computing, quantum optics and quantum photonics. The purpose is to provide young participants an idea about the wide scope of the rapidly expanding area of quantum computation science from leading international experts. This will also act as a satellite meeting to the conference being organized by the Centre for Quantum Information and Quantum Computation in Bangalore during 7-11 January 2013.This will also act as a satellite meeting to the conference being organized by the Centre for Quantum Information and Quantum Computation in Bangalore during 7-11 January 2013. Quantum computation is one of the most fundamental and important research topics today, from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. A fault tolerant computation scheme, such as that protected against dephasing or decay of quantum information, is crucial for this purpose. It has been known for some time that a class of quasi-particles of non-abelian braiding statistics, such as the Majorana fermions, can be an excellent platform to achieve such a topologically protected quantum computation. While recent discovery of the Majorana fermions in semiconductor nanowires have boosted the quantum computation community, other material platforms, in particular graphene, are also being researched extensively. Much research is directed towards electron-electron interaction and non-trivial p-type superconductivity in graphene with the ultimate aim to create and detect Majorana fermions in these systems. Recent Trends in Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems
"Dynamical Systems" is an exciting and very active field in mathematics that involves tools and techniques from many areas. A dynamical system can be obtained by iterating a function or letting evolve in time the solution of an equation. Even if the rule of evolution is deterministic, the long term behavior of the system is often chaotic. Different branches of "Dynamical Systems", in particular "Ergodic Theory", provide tools to quantify this chaotic behavior of the system and to predict it in average.This program has been planned in two parts: 7 day Workshop (Dec 18-24, 2012) followed by 4 day Discussion Meeting (Dec 26-29, 2012). The aim is to bring together on one platform experts from around the world who are actively working in various sub-disciplines of Dynamical Systems.
