We present integral equations for the area of minimal surfaces in AdS_3 ending on generic smooth boundary contours. The equations are derived from the continuum limit of the AMSV result for null polygonal boundary contours. Remarkably these continuum equations admit exact solutions in some special cases. In particular we describe a novel exact solution which interpolates between the circle and 4-cusp solutions.

A half-BPS circular Wilson loop in maximally supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory in an arbitrary representation is described by a Gaussian matrix model with a particular insertion. The additional entanglement entropy of a spherical region in the presence of such a loop was recently computed by Lewkowycz and Maldacena using exact matrix model results. In this talk I will utilise the supergravity solutions that are dual to such Wilson loops in large representations to calculate this entropy holographically. Employing the results of Gomis, Matsuura, Okuda and Trancanelli to express this holographic entanglement entropy in a matrix model language, I will demonstrate complete agreement with the formula derived by Lewkowycz and Maldacena.
Discovering the QCD Axion with Black Holes and Gravitational Waves

In the next few years, Advanced LIGO will be the first experiment to detect gravitational waves. Through superradiance of stellar black holes, it may also be the first experiment to discover the QCD axion with decay constant around or above the GUT scale. When an axion's Compton wavelength is comparable to the size of a black hole, the axion binds to the black hole, forming a "gravitational atom". Due to superradiance, the number of axions occupying the bound levels grows exponentially, extracting energy and angular momentum from the black hole. I will discuss the promising gravitational wave signals from axions transitioning between levels of the gravitational atom and axions annihilating to gravitons. Events for axions in the range 10^−13 to 10^−10 eV can be visible at aLIGO. The signals produced are long-lasting, monochromatic, and can be distinguished from ordinary astrophysical sources. These signatures are also promising for lighter axions at future, lower-frequency, GW observatories. I will also present our updated exclusion on the QCD axion mass range of 6*10^−13 eV < ma < 1.5*10^−11 eV imposed by black hole spin measurements.
Three-Point Function in N=4 SYM and Spin Vertex

In this talk I will explain how to compute three-point functions of N=4 SYM theory in the planar limit for tree level and one-loop in perturbation theory. First I will recall how to formulate the problem of computing the three-point function of operators with determined R-charges in the language of integrable spin chains. In the su(2) sector, the tree-level three point function can be obtained in terms of determinants, whose large R-charge limit can be taken explicitly. Then I will report a systematic method to compute the su(2) three point function at higher loops. In particular, we are able to take the semi-classical limit, and we can compare our result with the calculation from string theory. In the Frolov-Tseytlin limit we find a perfect match at one-loop. Finally I will present a new formalism of computing three-point functions called the spin vertex formalism, which is the weak coupling counter-part of the string vertex in the string field theory. I will describe how to construct the spin vertex and discuss its important properties.

We explain how to obtain the spectrum of operators with protected scaling dimensions in a four-dimensional superconformal field theory from cyclic homology. Additionally, we show that the superconformal index of a quiver gauge theory equals the Euler characteristic of the cyclic homology of the Ginzburg dg algebra associated to the quiver. For quiver gauge theories which are dual to type IIB string theory on the product of an arbitrary smooth Sasaki-Einstein manifold with five-dimensional AdS space, the index is calculated both from the gauge theory and gravity viewpoints. We find complete agreement. Finally we show how to match the spectrum of protected operators on a supergravity compactification involving generalized complex geometry.

We study the dimensional reduction of 3d QFTs with N=2 supersymmetry. In particular, we are interested in deriving dualities between 2d N=(2,2) theories starting from 3d dualities. Our main tool is the supersymmetric index, ie, the partition function on S^2 x S^1, which formally reduces to the partition function on S^2 as the radius of the circle goes to zero. There are various technical subtleties in this limit of the index which reflect physical subtleties in the reduction of the theories. We reproduce several known 2d N=(2,2) dualities and find evidence for some new ones.

The holographic RG of Anti-De Sitter gives a powerful clue about the underlying AdS/CFT correspondence. The question is whether similar hints can be found for the heretofore elusive holographic dual of De Sitter. The framework of stochastic inflation uses nonperturbative insight to tame bad behavior in the perturbation series of a massless scalar in DS at late times. Remarkably, this fully quantum system loses phase information in the leading approximation, but retains a probabilistic character and allows for a controlled prediction of late time Green's functions. Recasting this as a "resummation of time", we wish understand whether the distributions that result can be thought of as an attractive UV fixed point of a theory
living on a spacelike slice of DS. We derive stochastic inflation via the wavefunctional approach to Quantum Field Theory. This allows for the straightforward implementation of corrections to the original framework.

Axions are an exceptionally well-motivated dark matter candidate in addition to being a consequence of the Peccei-Quinn solution to the strong CP problem. ADMX (Axion Dark Matter eXperiment) has recently been selected as the axion search for the US DOE Second-Generation Dark Matter Program. I will discuss the imminent upgrade of ADMX to a definitive search for micro-eV mass dark matter axions as well as the ongoing research and development of new technologies to expand the reach of ADMX to the entire plausible dark matter axion mass range.

We discuss properties of 2-point functions in CFTs in 2+1D at finite temperature. For concreteness, we focus on those involving conserved flavour currents, in particular on the associated conductivity. At frequencies much greater than the temperature, ω >> T, the ω dependence of the conductivity can be computed from the operator product expansion (OPE) between the currents and operators which acquire a non-zero expectation value at T > 0. Such results are found to be in excellent agreement with quantum Monte Carlo studies of the O(2) Wilson-Fisher CFT. Results for the conductivity and other observables are also obtained in vector 1/N expansions. We match these large ω results to the corresponding correlators of holographic representations of the CFT: the holographic approach then allows us to extrapolate to small ω/T. Other holographic studies implicitly only used the OPE between the currents and the energy-momentum tensor, and this yields the correct leading large ω behavior for a large class of CFTs. However, for the Wilson-Fisher CFT a relevant “thermal” operator must also be considered, and then consistency with the Monte Carlo results is obtained without a previously needed ad hoc rescaling of the T value [1]. Dark matter is clear evidence of the existence of new physics beyond the Standard Model, and there are compelling reasons to expect that this physics can be probed at the LHC. As we prepare for Run II, we must consider a wide range of possible phenomenology, leaving no stone unturned. In this talk, I present a set of scalar and pseudoscalar models which provide a useful framework to interpret dark matter results, and can motivate new searches in novel channels at the LHC.

At large N, an important sector of the ABJM field theory defined on a stack of N M2-branes can be described holographically by the D=4 N=8 SO(8)-gauged supergravity of de Wit and Nicolai. Since its inception, the latter has been tacitly assumed to be unique. Recently, however, a one-parameter family of SO(8) gaugings of N=8 supergravity has been discovered, the de Wit-Nicolai theory being just a member in this class. I will explain how this overlooked family of SO(8)-gauged supergravities is deeply related to electric/magnetic duality breaking in four dimensions. I will then discuss some predictions that can be made about the family of dual large-N field theories that these supergravities define, focusing on the structure of superconformal phases and the RG flows between them. I will finally argue that when the gauging is chosen to be related, but different, to the SO(8) one, the D=4 N=8 family arises as consistent truncation of massive IIA on the six-sphere, with the Romans mass identified as the electric/magnetic duality-breaking parameter.
