The year 2013 has been marked for various mathematical activities under a wide umbrella of initiatives called the Mathematics of the Planet Earth (MPE) 2013, which will focus on mathematical research in areas of relevance to the various processes that affect the planet earth. The dynamics of the oceans and the atmosphere and the changes in the climate are of course the obvious topics that are very important for the life on planet earth and make use of mathematics in an essential way. In addition to these, a multitude of other topics are of relevance to MPE-2013, including the financial and economic systems, the energy production and utilization, spread of epidemics at the population level, ecology and genomics of species, just to name a few. A comprehensive and ever-evolving list of such topics can be found here.To stimulate imagination on the many domains where mathematics plays a crucial role in planetary issues, the following four (non exhaustive) themes are proposed as part of MPE-...

Scattering amplitudes play a pivotal role in quantum field theory as they are used to extract experimental predictions from theory. In order to explain the experimental data from the Large Hadron Collider (Cern), for instance, it is crucial to set up efficient ways to compute scattering cross-sections which then serve as a cross-check on the existing standard model of particle physics. There has been some remarkable work over the past few years that has improved both our understanding as well as our ability to calculate scattering amplitudes in gauge theories and, more recently, in gravity theories. These have led to a new perspective on scattering amplitudes in which underlying symmetries play a central role in solving for the amplitudes while conventional starting points - such as the Lagrangian - emerge as derived or secondary concepts. The most impressive results have been obtained for supersymmetric gauge theories, for which analytic computations are available for tree and many lo...

Humanity's interest in the Theory of Numbers began deep in antiquity in Asia, and from there passed to Greece and the Arab world, and then on to the West. The aim of the annual Pan Asian Number Theory (PANT) Conferences is to encourage research in Number Theory in present day Asia, and especially to foster collaborations among young Asian Number Theorists. This ICTS program will incorporate the fourth PANT Conference, with previous conferences being held in Korea (2009), Japan (2010) and China (2011). The PANT Conference itself, consisting of about 20 one hour invited lectures, will take place over the four days July 23 -27, 2012, inclusive. It will be preceded by an Instructional Workshop from July 17-22, aimed at presenting in detail for graduate students and non-specialists what is known about the Bloch-Kato conjectures for the Riemann zeta function at the odd positive integers. The final day of the Workshop, meant as a transitional day into the Conference, will feature a series of ...

Plasmonics with its proven role in sensing, surface-enhanced spectroscopy and energy transfer is fast evolving into a vast field with much broader scope heralding unprecedented applications. Recent advances in nano fabrication techniques have opened up novel directions: nanoscale heat transfer and thermal imaging, single molecule spectroscopy, light-matter interaction at nano scales, sub-diffraction-limited quantum information processing, biomedical imaging and diagnostics, nano-antennas for LEDs, NSOM and near-field probes etc. The list is ever-growing because of the dramatic growth of our understanding of materials sciences. With the novel meta-materials one can now push the negative refraction domain to optical frequencies. Advances in graphene-plasmonics have opened up unforeseen possibilities. One is now moving closer to the dream notion of a lab-on-a-chip.It is envisaged that the interactions at this Discussion Meeting would identify the future trends and techniques required to a...

This will be a discussion meeting on various current topics of research in String Theory. Some focus areas will be : higher spin theories and holography, transport phenomena in strongly interacting systems, applications of AdS/CFT, black holes, dynamics of membranes etc. The participants will be a selected group of experts (including younger, upcoming talent). The meeting will provide an opportunity for the participants to discuss their work and hopefully initiate new collaborations.Schedule of the Meeting: The meeting will be held over the period Jun. 11-22nd. Most particiipants will stay for one of the two weeks. We expect to have one or two informal talks per day.
