Discussion Meeting: Advances in Graphene, Majorana Fermions, Quantum Computation
Quantum computation is one of the most fundamental and important research topics today, from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. A fault tolerant computation scheme, such as that protected against dephasing or decay of quantum information, is crucial for this purpose. It has been known for some time that a class of quasi-particles of non-abelian braiding statistics, such as the Majorana fermions, can be an excellent platform to achieve such a topologically protected quantum computation. While recent discovery of the Majorana fermions in semiconductor nanowires have boosted the quantum computation community, other material platforms, in particular graphene, are also being researched extensively. Much research is directed towards electron-electron interaction and non-trivial p-type superconductivity in graphene with the ultimate aim to create and detect Majorana fermions in these systems. This Discussion Meeting on "Advances in Graphene, Majorana fermions, and Quantum Computa...

Recent Trends in Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems
"Dynamical Systems" is an exciting and very active field in mathematics that involves tools and techniques from many areas. A dynamical system can be obtained by iterating a function or letting evolve in time the solution of an equation. Even if the rule of evolution is deterministic, the long term behavior of the system is often chaotic. Different branches of "Dynamical Systems", in particular "Ergodic Theory", provide tools to quantify this chaotic behavior of the system and to predict it in average. This program has been planned in two parts: 7 day Workshop (Dec 18-24, 2012) followed by 4 day Discussion Meeting (Dec 26-29, 2012). The aim is to bring together on one platform experts from around the world who are actively working in various sub-disciplines of Dynamical Systems. An important aspect of the program will be an emphasis on making it accessible to younger participants. The workshop will begin with lectures on basic Ergodic Theory followed by lectures on Topological Dynamics, ...

Mini Program on Dirac Material and Quantum Computation
The areas of quantum condensed matter physics and quantum information have made substantial theoretical and experimental progress in recent years. Some of such advances are discovery of materials such as graphene and topological insulators whose low energy quasiparticles obey effective Dirac equations, prediction of existence of Majorana fermions as effective low-energy quasiparticles of condensed matter systems, and theoretical and experimental progress in quantum computation. This mini program, organized in the format of a school, is geared towards presenting the basic physics and current status of these topics to both graduate students and researchers from other sub-fields of condensed matter physics. The school will have three pedagogical lectures by each of the four lecturers on graphene, topological insulators, non-Abelian quantum matter and quantum computation.

Astronomical Surveys
This is a comprehensive program covering frontline research in multiple disciplines of astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology. The program will be organized in two parts:(i) Winter School on Astronomical and Cosmological Surveys, Dec. 10-17, 2012(ii) Young Astrophysicists’ Symposium, Dec. 19-21, 20012The school will expose young Indian researchers to the underlying physics and data analyis issues in large scale observational surveys and subsequent use in addressing outstanding problems in astronomy and astrophysics. The underlying aim is to prepare the students with the capability to exploit the huge astronomical database that the different surveys and astronomy missions (for example VLT, Gemini, Subaru, XMM-Newton, Chandra, Spitzer, Herschel, ALMA, Astro-H, JWST, Suzaku, eROSITA, DES, LSST, Euclid, LOFT, ATHENA, Kepler etc.) will create. The topics to be coverd in the school lectures will include Surveys of the Local Universe (stars, interstellar medium, exoplanets)High Energy Surveys...

Winter School on Stochastic Analysis and Control of Fluid Flow
Stochastic analysis and control of fluid flow problems have seen great mathematical advancement over past two decades. A vast number of physical and engineering systems are encompassed under various flow governing equations. Various applications lie in defense related problems, important one is aero-hydrodynamic drag reduction in aerial, surface and undersea vehicles. Other applications are in atmospheric and ocean data assimilation, plasma fusion and energy-environmental problems. The aim of the school is to make students and researchers across various organizations working in fluid flow problems well acquainted with the basic and advanced topics in control of partial differential equations (PDEs) arising from fluid dynamics with special emphasis on Navier-Stokes equations in both deterministic and stochastic settings. In the first week, introductory topics from Navier-Stokes equations, stochastic analysis and control of PDEs will be introduced. This would help in building the backgr...
