Probabilistic Methods in Negative Curvature
The focal area of the program lies at the juncture of three areas: Probability theory of random walks,Ergodic theory of flows on negatively curved spaces,Gromov hyperbolic groups.Random walks on finite and infinite, finitely generated groups is a topic of considerable vintage. It is well-known, starting with Kesten's characterization of amenability, that asymptotic properties of such random walks are intimately connected to the large scale geometry of the underlying group. Vershik and Kaimanovich (1983) introduced entropic techniques to study the Poisson boundary of random walks on countable discrete groups, which is a natural measure theoretic space "at infinity" associated with the random walk. In a seminal paper in 2000, Kaimanovich gave a very general sufficient condition on the one step distribution of the walk on a hyperbolic group for the Poisson boundary to equal the (geometric) Gromov boundary. Further probabilistic methods have started being applied to hyperbolic groups relat...

Algebraic and Analytic Aspects of Automorphic Forms
The theory of automorphic forms is one of the frontier areas in mathematics, which links diverse areas such as representation theory of real and p-adic groups, theory of L-functions, and modular forms. The algebraic and analytic aspects of the theory of automorphic forms are at the basis of much of modern number theory. The algebraic theory of automorphic forms broadly comprises of the study of automorphic representations of adelic groups, their L-functions, and also the study of their local components. The theory of group representations for real, p-adic, and adelic groups, is an actively pursued area of research and plays a central role in modern number theory. In the analytic theory of automorphic forms, the study of L-functions is one of the most important topics, together with Fourier coefficients of modular forms. The workshop will be from 25th of February to 1st of March, 2019, and the discussion meeting from 4th of March to 7th of March, 2019. The workshop will consist of the fol...

Monsoon Day
The Indian summer monsoon is a dramatic multiscale, multiphysics event that has a profound impact on the food security of a billion people. Accuracy of predictions for every year's rainfall has serious consequences for the economy of the country. This requires a thorough understanding of the basic dynamical system of the monsoon, which is an important open problem. Further, there is a need to create a community of researchers in theoretical sciences including mathematics, physics, and computer science, in order to improve our understanding of the Indian monsoon, and in general of the tropical dynamics of the atmosphere and the oceans. The ICTS monsoon group aims to address both these needs, and in particular endeavours to study this problem using a three-pronged, multi-disciplinary approach, putting together statistical, mathematical, and physical perspectives. The "Monsoon Day" will be a one day discussion meeting to be held in connection with ICTAI - the International Center for Transf...

Air-sea Interactions in the Bay of Bengal From Monsoons to Mixing
Although total rainfall during the South Asian Monsoon varies by only ~10% across India, spatiotemporal variability in precipitation is large, difficult to predict, and has far-reaching implications for local communities. The dependence of an agrarian economy on rainfall makes prediction of monsoon variability of paramount importance to India and other countries in South Asia. Currently, representation of the monsoon in global climate models exhibits large biases over the Indian Ocean. In particular, skill in prediction of intraseasonal oscillations (ISOs), which are associated with active (wet) and break (dry) periods, is modest compared to its potential, giving reason to strive for improved forecast capabilities. Ocean-atmosphere coupled models have greater skill in representing ISOs compared to stand-alone atmospheric models. This discrepancy highlights the importance of air-sea interaction to ISO prediction. The focus of this workshop is on air-sea interaction within the Bay of Ben...

Preparatory School on Population Genetics and Evolution
The 2019 preparatory school on Population Genetics and Evolution (PGE2019) will be an intensive one-week course, scheduled an year before the Main School on the same subject in 2020. Together, the program aims to develop an interest and understanding of population genetics and evolution among students from diverse backgrounds, including biology, computer science, mathematics, medicine and physics. The preparatory school will cover (1) key mathematical concepts and tools that would benefit students from a biology background, and (2) important concepts and basic knowledge of biology and genetics that would benefit students from a non-biology background. The course will include lectures to disseminate key information; problem sets to get familiar with concepts and tools; and discussion of primary literature in a journal club format. The reading will include both empirical and theoretical work in evolutionary biology and population genetics, allowing students to see applications of course c...
