An indepth introduction to quantum error correction, faulttolerant quantum computing, and related topics. Covers stabilizer codes, CSS codes, higherdimensional codes, specific code constructions, entanglement purification protocols, and quantum channel capacity. Also bounds on quantum error correction: quantum Hamming bound, quantum Singleton bound, linear programming bounds and the quantum MacWilliams identity; and principles of faulttolerant quantum computation: faulttolerant error measurement, faulttolerant gate design, the threshold for faulttolerant quantum computation, and topological faulttolerance.

This spring 2005 seminar series presents some of the concepts and models that have been developed in recent years to explain the emergence of complexity or to parameterize, measure or describe complex systems. This includes the theory of selforganized criticality, information or algorithmic measures of complexity, using networks to capture relevant interactions in physical, biological and technological systems, and attempts to describe turbulence, as well as aspects of biological and social behaviour within this framework. Talks are aimed at an advanced undergraduate audience.
