Weisskopf, Victor Frederick, Burhop, Eric Henry StoneleyA socially engaged scientist by V. F. WEISSKOPF. On the origin of the Einstein-Russell statement on nuclear weapon by H. S. BURHOP. This week, we pay homage to Albert Einstein, the giant of twentieth-century physics born exactly 100 years ago on 14 March 1879 in Ulm, Germany. At the height of his career, Einstein made a whole series of monumental contributions to physics, including the elaborate theories of special and general relativity which revolutionized human thought and marked a major breakthrough in our understanding to the Universe. Along with quantum mechanics, relativity is one of the twin pillars of understanding which allow us here at CERN to study the behaviour of the tiniest components of matter. The development of quantum mechanics took the combined efforts of some of the greatest scientists the world has known, while relativity was developed almost single-handed by Einstein. The centenary of his birth is being commemorated all over the world. Exhibitions and symposia are being organized, books published, postage stamps issued, statues unveiled, and television documentaries screened. Here at CERN, M. Fierz and V. Weisskopf will present their own tributes to the great man on Monday evening 12 March at 20.00 in the Main Auditorium..

The character of physical laws: the distinction of past and future
In this series of Messenger Lectures given at Cornell University, Nobel Prize winning theoretical physicist Richard Feynman explores physical principles and the study of physics. This talk describes the phenomenon of irreversiblity, using analogies from temperature and entropy. Dr. Feynman also explores connections between scientific and philosophical concepts. -

In this talk Dr. Feynman considers our knowledge of the p hysical world and looks at the art of guessing as a useful method for discovering new physical laws. -
Quantum dot and semiconductor research with the quantum physics group at NRC
Aviv Padawer-Blatt1010Spin and hybrid spin-charge qubits have been a long-term goal of the fields of Spintronics and Quantum Information. Such a qubit in an array would ideally interact separately from other qubits and “tunably” with a Microwave field. In this way, a single qubit may be turned “on”, interact with its environment to acquire information (for example, flip a spin state), and be turned “off” so it may indefinitely store that information. The necessary tunability for such a task has been demonstrated in a single hole of a p-type GaAs/AlGaAs Double Quantum Dot (DQD) with strong Spin-Orbit Interaction (SOI), in which the interdot tunnel coupling is strong so that hybridized quantum molecular states form [1]. If the interdot coupling is reduced, this form of tunability is lost. However, a new phenomenon may permit tunability: the weak interdot coupling gives rise to distinct dot-specific quantum dot g-factors smoothly connected by the spin-orbit interaction. By sweeping gate voltages such that we choose which dot is being probed, a qubit may be turned “on” or “off” as necessary. During my work terms with the low-temperature Quantum Physics Group at the National Research Council of Canada, I investigated the appearance of dot-specific g-factors and partially characterized the double quantum dot system using a theoretical model.
